You won't find many fans of preseason football rankings due to the fact that many programs have not been able to hold true to them. But nonetheless, it gives us (the fans) and of course the great media (ESPiN) something to talk about endlessly. Who deserves to be #1 and who does not? It's all guesswork because you never know how a team will fair during a long season.
As a fan I can't argue with the USA Today's Top 5 as they all seem worthy of the spots they are in.
Here's to football! GO BUCKS!
As a fan I can't argue with the USA Today's Top 5 as they all seem worthy of the spots they are in.
- Georgia (22 first place votes), 1438 total. Finished the 2007 season after beating Hawaii 41-10 in a game where there was no doubt who the better team was. Georgia could pretty much move the ball at will. 159 yards rushing compared to Hawaii's -5 proves that statement. Georgia plays a favorable OOC schedule (an SEC team playing a WEAK OOC schedule?! Where have we heard that before?) Georgia Southern (WK 1) and Central Michigan (WK2) will be cupcakes but they have a good opponent in Arizona State (WK4 @ASU)
- USC (14 first place votes), 1430 total. Traditionally strong program and always recruits top blue chip players from across the country. Thrashed the only team to beat the Buckeyes in the Big Ten for the past couple seasons, 49-17 in the Rose Bowl. USC's biggest weakness could be the QB spot (and experience overall). They lose John David Booty to graduation but they haven't had a problem replacing great QB's. USC always schedules tough OOC opponents (SEC where you at?) and this season is no different. Virginia (WK1), Ohio State (WK2), Notre Dame (WK11).
- Ohio State (14 first place votes), 1392 total. The Bucks have had there share of bright light games (back-to-back BCS Title appearances.) However they have had trouble getting over that hump and earning their 2nd National Title in the BCS era. The Buckeye's return 18 starters this season (9 on offense, 9 on defense) from teams that played in both title games. Experience and leadership shouldn't be an issue for this squad as they get geared up for another run at it. The Bucks open up the season with OOC games against Youngstown St. (WK1), Ohio (WK2), @USC (WK3), and Troy (WK4).
- Oklahoma (3 first place votes), 1329 total. Another strong program year-in and year-out. Oklahoma is coming off another good year after finishing 11-3 overall and 6-2 in the BigXII. However, they are also coming off 4 consecutive BCS bowl losses, a stat that no Sooner fan wants to hear. Losing to West Virginia 48-28 in the Fiesta Bowl. But don't count out this Oklahoma team as a Bob Stoops team never quits and will always be in the hunt as long as he's around.
- Florida (5 first place votes), 1293 total. The Gaytors (actually Gators...) return the reigning Heisman Memorial Trophy winner and one of the most dynamic players in college football, Tim Tebow (who actually has one of the hottest girlfriends around!). Tebow won't be sneaking up on any teams this season as they know how he plays but that won't stop him from trying to become the 2nd player ever to win two Heisman trophy's (oh heaven forbid...) Can he stay healthy though?
