Team's most recent All-Americans honored at the game for earning first-team accolades
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State's four most recent first-team All-American selections - linebacker Ryan Shazier, offensive tackle Jack Mewhort, cornerback Bradley Roby and defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins - will be honored Saturday during the 2014 LiFE Sports Spring Game, presented by Nationwide. Kickoff is set for approximately 1:30 p.m.
Shazier and Mewhort were All-Americans in 2013 while Hankins and Roby were All-Americans in 2012. A little about each:
Shazier, who has opted to forego his senior season to enter the NFL Draft, was named a first-team Associated Press All-American in 2013 in addition to earning first-team accolades by USA Today, ESPN.com and Sports Illustrated. Shazier ranked third nationally in tackles-for-loss (22.5) in 2013 and he ranked second nationally in solo tackles with 101. He also led the Big Ten with 143 total tackles. He finished his career ranking 15th at Ohio State with 315 total tackles and sixth all-time in solo tackles (208) and career tackles-for-loss (44.5). He was on pace to set school records in both had he stayed for his senior season. He played in 38 Ohio State games and started 28 times.
Mewhort was a three year starter along the offensive line for the Buckeyes, including during a school-record setting run of 24-consecutive victories spanning all of the 2012 and 2013 regular seasons. One of the best players on Ohio State's prolific, record-setting offense of 2013, Mewhort was named a first-team All-American by ESPN.com, a second-team All-American by Walter Camp, Sports Illustrated and the Football Writers Association of America, and a third-team Associated Press All-American. He was the foundation of an offensive line that ranked fifth nationally in rushing (308.6 yards per game) and that shattered school records for points scored (637), touchdowns (87) and touchdown passes (38). He played in 45 games as a Buckeye and started 39 consecutive games.
Roby, a starter in all 37 games he played in over his three-year career with the Buckeyes, finished atop the Ohio State record books in career and single season pass break-ups with 36 and 17 (in 2012), respectively. He, too, decided to forego his senior season to enter the NFL Draft. In 2012 he led the nation in passes defended (PBUs and INTs) with 19 and he was the only player in the nation to score touchdowns three different ways (off a fumbled punt, blocked punt and interception return). ESPN.com named him a first-team All-American after the 2012 season while Athlons named him third-team in 2013. He was selected all-Big Ten Conference by both the coaches and media the past two years.
Hankins was named a first-team FoxSportsNEXT.com/Scout All-American in 2012 in addition to being named a second-team Associated Press All-American and a third-team All-American by Phil Steele. The all-Big Ten Conference performer had 55 tackles for the undefeated Buckeyes as a junior. He elected to forego his senior season, after playing in 38 Ohio State games and starting 25 times, to enter the NFL Draft. He was selected in the second round by the New York Giants and played in five games for the Giants in 2013.
After the landscaping
The losing team in the spring game (coaches, trainers, administrative staff, etc.) will, for the third consecutive year, clean up, weed, mulch and improve the landscape of Buckeye Grove as a community service project. This typically occurs the first Friday after the spring game.
Once the cleanup and landscaping task is completed the four newest All-American Buckeyes will have a Buckeye tree planted in their honor in Buckeye Grove, located just south of the stadium. Ohio State has had 186 first-team All-Americans over the years.
