Unique angle from @Birm as he looked at how one defensive timeout on Saturday night changed the game for Ohio State — and showed Ryan Day has a grasp on the big picture, not just the offense. https://t.co/CACUObNa4E— Austin Ward (@AWardSports) September 29, 2019
Coming off of the Buckeyes' biggest win of the season yet, a 48-7 victory at Nebraska that earned them National Team of the Week honors, Ryan Day made his weekly Monday night radio appearance on the Ohio State IMG Sports Network's Buckeye Roundtable show to review the performance against the Cornhuskers and look ahead to this week's sixth game of the season against Michigan State at Ohio Stadium on Saturday night (7:30 p.m., ABC). A quick recap of what Day had to say: On how Ohio State's defense shut down Adrian Martinez and the Nebraska offense: “Running the quarterback, that was something that we had to take away, and I thought Greg (Mattison) and Jeff (Hafley) did a great job hammering that point all week.” He thought the Buckeyes forced Martinez into throwing the ball, which led to three interceptions in the Cornhuskers' first 20 offensive plays. Day said he thought Nebraska had built some momentum on offense before Jeff Okudah's second interception late in the first quarter, which really swung the momentum of the game in Ohio State's favor. On J.K. Dobbins: “He's really taken to a leadership role. He's a guy that will speak up before the game in the locker room, get the guys juiced up ... the more guys we get doing that, the better we're going to be.” On Chase Young: “He is playing at a high level right now. He's doing a good job in the run game and the pass game. He's playing all three downs. Larry's doing a good job of keeping him fresh, but that goes back to the depth we've created.” Day said Jonathon Cooper, who played in his first game of the season at Nebraska, spoke to the team before Saturday's game. “He's a voice that the guys listen to when he speaks up ... He's a man. When he speaks, people listen. When he's on the field, everybody's better off. I know I'm a better coach. He's a beautiful kid, and we're excited to have him back.” Day said he thought the Buckeyes' experience of playing in big games helped them handle the environment at Nebraska. “We expected maybe a little more adversity than what hit us, but guys didn't panic. Even when the momentum felt like it was swinging there a little bit early on, and it's easy to kind of feel the crowd in a game like that and have it affect your play, and it didn't.” On Michigan State: “One of the best-coached teams in the league. Coach Dantonio is one of the best coaches that's ever coached in college football, in terms of fundamentals, technique. They're really sound in what they do.” “On offense, we're going to have to run the ball, and it's not easy to run against these guys. They're one of the top run defenses in the country every year for a reason.”
Only three other Buckeye head coaches were able to start 8-0 at Ohio State. We compare Ryan Day's start to Urban Meyer, Earle Bruce and Carroll Widdoes. https://t.co/SGnGwMBWMJ pic.twitter.com/5rMStpbpij— Eleven Warriors (@11W) October 2, 2019
COLUMBUS — Ohio State head coach Ryan Day takes part in his weekly radio show Thursday at noon. He will likely look back a bit at last week’s win at Nebraska and then spend a good amount of time talking about the challenge this week with Michigan State. We will provide live updates once Day begins, so refresh for the latest. + Asked to rank Nick Bosa, Joey Bosa, and Chase Young, he said that is still to be determined, especially if Young comes back for his senior season. + Michigan State is playing well right now. They shut the OSU offense down in the first half last year, so the Buckeyes know what they’re up against. + He doesn’t want to overdo it with history and what MSU has been able to do against the Buckeyes, but he has talked to his players about it. This is a team that has done big things in the Big Ten and so the Buckeyes must take them seriously and know what they’re getting into on Saturday. + MSU will mix their pressures and do just enough to keep you on your heels. + MSU is a well coached team. Mark Dantonio is one of the best coaches in the country in the last two decades. They don’t give you anything. They make you earn everything. They are tough and they know your offense and defense and play with great fundamentals. This is a team that’s going to come in here and wants to win the Big Ten. QB Brian Lewerke is playing the best he’s played. + Drue Chrisman is doing great, but they’re not getting him too much work this season, which is okay. + They try not to focus on forcing the ball to any of their receivers because they roll guys, but Chris Olave is a guy who can do so many things. He’s tough in man and is smart in zone and can do something with the ball whenever he gets it. + The yards after contact for the running backs is pretty high right now and they are running so hard right now. Master Teague is a big changeup from JK Dobbins. He’s a bigger downhill guy who can break tackles. Once he gets going, he has a lot of momentum behind him. + Josh Alabi was the player of the game on offense and it is awesome to see somebody stick around so long with a great attitude. He played well and it was bit to see. It also speaks to the depth of the offensive line and the culture of that room. Hats off to that whole room. + The offensive line finished as good as he’s seen last week and the defensive line dominated. “They’re both doing a good job at a high level.” This is a long season and Saturday’s game is against a team that takes pride in winning those battles up front. + Ohio State has thrown more touchdown passes than any other team in the nation since Ryan Day came to Ohio State. Day credited everybody. It’s a product of everybody being involved and good talent, and then calling the right plays and practicing them during the week. + The fast starts are a result of focusing on making it happen throughout the week. They want to do this every week, but they don’t hang everything on this happening. They know it’s not going to happen every week. It helps when you can get three-and-outs or turnovers, because that usually means short fields. An early lead can give you momentum. + Justin Fields is doing a good job of taking care of the ball for sure. The 15-yard touchdown run is one of those things you can’t coach, you just hope they happen through recognition of what is and isn’t available. + It is satisfying to sit down and turn on the film and watch this pass defense. The corners are locking things down and playing very well right now. Nebraska tried a double move on Damon Arnette and he wasn’t biting. + They had to call another timeout prior to a Nebraska punt because they had two No. 5s in the game and it was fourth and 3. It would have given the Huskers a first down. + The I-formation caught them off guard. You could feel the crowd getting into it. You could see momentum building for Nebraska. So they called a timeout and caught their breath and talked to their guys. + Defensively, execution is just as important as it is on offense. All three levels are tied together and players need to execute their duties. + The defensive line and secondary are doing a good job of playing off of each other. The coverage is good, which gives the rush time. The rush is good, which makes the coverage even more effective. + The two tight end sets have been effective for this offense. Bringing in an extra tight end is something defenses have grown unaccustomed to facing with so many spread offenses in football. + The negative so far is that this team hasn’t had to play 60 minutes yet, but they are constantly harping on it. “We have to have that approach every game so that we don’t get caught off-guard.” + They use science when it comes to hydrating their players and making sure whatever they lose during workouts and practices are replaced. For instance, they can pump cold water into Josh Myers’ shoulder pads during practice because he gets hot. + Buckeyes came out and played hard last week. They needed to be tougher, have more effort, and play harder than Nebraska, and they did. + Tuesday was a good practice. There was good energy and Wednesday was good as well. They know it is going to take a full four quarters this week.

I really like listening to Ryan Day talk... he seems so approachable and down to earth, with lots of football knowledge.
Ryan Day said he told Justin Fields the interception was his fault. He made the wrong play call expecting a look from Michigan State that they didn’t get. “I’ll take the blame on that one.”— Dan Hope (@Dan_Hope) October 6, 2019 Ryan Day on the first quarter: “That was not a good quarter of football,” but the Buckeyes needed that adversity as a learning experience.— Dan Hope (@Dan_Hope) October 6, 2019 OSU cosch Ryan Day on coming back to win emphatically after rough start. “That was one of those boxes you check off.”“I think we can learn a ton from this game:”— Nathan Baird (@nwbaird) October 6, 2019

Ryan Day: "We're kind of in a self-evaluation phase right now on both sides of the ball." He says each coach will give "tangible things" for each player to work on during the bye week. Ryan Day says he's been pleased with Ohio State's toughness, then specifically mentioned Justin Fields and his willingness to get hit: "I think out team is getting a little bit of that identity." Ryan Day on what he would say if an NFL team called him about a coaching job: "I don't ever really want to talk about any of that stuff. I love it here. This is where I want to be." Day on NFL coaching rumors: “I love it here. This is where I want to be.” Day mentioned he doesn’t want to have to answer questions about NFL jobs for the next “5, 10, hopefully 20 years” while he’s at Ohio State. Ryan Day on the high-level 2021 in-state class: "It's huge because in recruiting, for us, our foundation is Ohio for sure, and the Midwest. ... When you have so many guys in Ohio who are right down the street from us, it's big. "It's working at a high level for us." Ryan Day: "It's great to be 6-0. I think when we looked at our season, we saw this first six games as a chunk ... It's something we talked with our team about, and our first goal was to get to 6-0, and here we are." Ryan Day on the offensive line: "When it was tough sledding early, they didn’t panic. They just kept swinging away." Day on Justin Fields: “I think Justin can make any throw on the field at any point. There’s not an area of the field he can’t get it.” Pressed further on whether he has contacted by the Washington Redskins, Ryan Day said "No," but reiterated that he didn't want to talk about NFL job offers. Ryan Day on Dwayne Haskins: "He'll be fine." Day said he still talks to Haskins regularly. Ryan Day on Luke Farrell: “He’s not a guy who takes a lot of maintenance. You tell him something once and he gets it." “When you’re preaching toughness and your quarterback takes a shot in the face…” Ryan Day said praising Justin Fields’ toughness. “That just goes to show you what this kid is made of." Ryan Day: "When you can run, you can really control the game." Ryan Day on Ohio State left guard Jonah Jackson: "I would say Jonah's as close to a man and pro as I've been around in a long time." Ryan Day said he values stability: “It is the worst thing to go home to your family and tell them they have to move again.” Day said he and his wife didn’t grow up that way. They lived in their same home town their entire life. Ryan Day acknowledged that Ohio State still has room to improve on kickoff and punt returns. "Our return game has just been OK ... I still think our return game can be better." Ryan Day said he saw Nick Bosa playing on Monday night, calling him a “terror.” When asked about Bosa planting the flag, Day just flashed a grin and walked away from the podium.
