    On the bye week
    • Ryan Day said they meet with each individual player during the bye week
    • "Its a great time to get a self assessment of where each guy's at and each unit's at"
    • They get to tell people some exact things they need to improve on.
On facing adversity against Michigan State
    • "That's a team that's tough – Michigan State has been."
    • Day said they had a clunky start, with the overthrown pass to the tight end, dropped pass by Binjimen Victor and run called back due to holding.
    • "We had some big plays – didn't make them."
    • "Just because you have a bad play doesn't mean you're having a bad game or you're a bad player."
    • Day was impressed with how his team responded to adversity.
    On handling blitzes
    • "First and second down is very different than third down and the red zone."
    • Day said Michigan State brought a lot of different blitzes on third down that they didn't do a good job picking up.
    • "Moving forward, we have to be a little cleaner in that area."
On Ryan Day being a celebrity
    • "I don't think it's any tougher, but there's more attention."
    • "People are great for the most part. A lot of pictures – people like pictures."
    • "As time goes on, there's more and more going on."
    • "That's okay, it's part of it. We've embraced that as a family."
    On the blackout
    • "Unbelievable. What a great atmosphere for all of Buckeye Nation and our players to experience."
    • "The atmosphere was off the charts."
    • "Everything you expected it to be in the Horseshoe on a night like that."
    On Luke Farrell's touchdown
    • "It's great to see Luke (Farrell) get a touchdown."
    • "The play itself – it wasn't exactly how we drew it up."
    • Day praised Justin Fields' ability to find him and Luke Farrell's ability to get the ball in the end zone.
    • "Luke is a stronger human than he gives himself credit for."
    On Binjimen Victor's touchdown
    • Ryan Day said they've spent a lot of time designing and setting up that play.
    • "That was something we had ready for about three weeks but the time wasn't right."
    • Day said they've set it up before with Justin Fields keeping the ball instead.
On Binjimen Victor responding from his drop
    • "We're going back to you. You have to have a short memory.
    • Day said in the past, Victor might have let the drop affect him, but it didn't this time.
    • "Hats off to him."
    On the offensive line
    • Day said they have four tackles they feel good about playing and a fifth is "coming along."
    • "We count all the knockdowns, and they take a lot of pride in their knockdowns."
    • "We try to get as many knockdowns as we can and try to emphasize finishing."
    • Day said Thayer Munford probably played the best game of his career.
    On the bye week schedule
    • Everything will be moved up a day in terms of practice, because the next game is on a Friday.
    • Day said the players have Thursday, Friday and Saturday off, but have to be back by noon on Sunday.
    On Jordan Fuller
    • Ryan Day praised Jordan Fuller's discipline.
    • Day explained that Fuller's discipline and development is the reason why he's so successful, because he's gotten better once he got to the next level and talent got equated.
    • "He's such a role model for all the young guys."
    • "What a great example of someone who is living his life the right way."
    On the linebackers
    • "We've got some good depth there."
    • Day acknowledged that it became a bit of a logjam when they moved Jahsen Wint and Brendon White to the bullet/strongside linebacker position.
    • "I think they're playing with speed and playing with toughness."
    On defending tight ends
    • "Pete Wener is a linebacker but he can really cover guys."
    • "That's also where the bullet guys come into play."
    • Day said guys like Brendan White have a combination of speed and size
    On the cornerbacks
    • Day praised both Cameron Brown and Sevyn Banks for stepping up when Damon Arnette left with an injury.
    • "I think both of those guys have grown."
    • Day said it's encouraging to lose a starter and be able to rotate two bench players into the game "without missing a beat."
    On Drue Chrisman
    • "When you're playing the game of field position, it's really, really important."
    • Day praised the punt coverage for forcing fair catches and not allowing a single return yard.
On if he wants high school championship games returning to Ohio Stadium
    • "Yes."
    • Day said they've had meetings to get that to happen.
    • "Anybody who plays high school football in the state of Ohio should want to play in the Horseshoe."
    • "I'm going to do everything I can to make that happen."

    What a joke. Harbaugh?

Day will need to escape the shadow of Urban Meyer. When he beats Wisconsin, that will be the start.

Coming off another big win at Northwestern and going into one of the biggest games of the season against Wisconsin this week, Ohio State coach Ryan Day made his weekly appearance on the Ohio State IMG Sports Network's Buckeye Roundtable show to discuss his takeaways from the Buckeyes' seventh win of the year and look ahead to Saturday's noon test against the Badgers.

A bullet-point recap of what Day had to say in his first media appearance of the week:

    • On the team's performance against Northwestern: "I thought all phases played well. We came out with great energy. I thought we started well. We also played well in the second half. ... Overall, I thought it was a good job coming off of a bye week."
    • Day said he thought the third-down conversions were key in the first quarter before the Buckeyes were able to get into a rhythm in the second quarter.
    • On Northwestern: "That's a great program. Pat's an unbelievable coach."
    • Day said he isn't making any major changes to Ohio State's practice routine this week.
    • On Chris Olave: "He's very fluid when he runs his routes, and he's got tremendous hand-eye (coordination) ... He's been very efficient for us. Very, very productive, as well."
    • Day said he thought the way the Buckeyes ended the first half, with Liam McCullough downing Drue Chrisman's punt at the 1-yard line and then Blake Haubeil making a 55-yard field goal on Ohio State's next possession, "says a lot about the team."
    • Early outlook on Wisconsin: "This is a really tough team. Inside guys are real powerful, on both sides of the ball ... They know how to run the football, and Coan and Cephus are talented in the perimeter as well, so you can't just load the box and not worry about the pass, they're very balanced on offense. And then on defense, best defense in America, statistically. They stop the run. (Zack) Baun's obviously the leader in terms of the guys up front. (Isaiahh) Loudermilk is a big guy inside. And then they're very talented at linebacker and the back end ... so it's going to be a challenge schematically and obviously, physically."
    • On Wisconsin's loss to Illinois: "That's college football ... That doesn't change anything in terms of our preparation. We know that these guys that are coming here, they're a great outfit, it's going to be tough."

    Ryan Day:

    • On what he's liked best about the team this season: "The chemistry, the leadership, the buy-in ... that part's been great."
    • Day said Baron Browning missed Friday's game due to an injury and he's "working through it," but "he's looking good right now."
    • On this week's game against Wisconsin: "They got great players on both sides of the ball, NFL players ... This has got to be our best game of the year. It's going to be our biggest challenge on both sides of the ball."
    • Day said Wisconsin pass-rusher Zack Baun "does a great job in one-on-one situations" and "the secondary is very talented as well," which forces teams to hold onto the ball longer than they'd like and allows the Badgers to rack up sacks.
    • On the amount of sacks the Buckeyes have given up, Day said there have been some lapses in protection but also that they have had some more sacks than they could have because Fields tries to keeps plays alive. They'll live with that, though, because of the plays he's able to create under pressure, like his 3rd-and-long completion to K.J. Hill on Friday when he avoided sacks from two defenders before completing a 20-yard pass.
    • Day said true freshman offensive tackle Dawand Jones will probably play more than four games and not redshirt this year because of how talented he is.
    • On fellow true freshmen Cade Stover and Steele Chambers, who have also played three games this year, Day said the Buckeyes will evaluate and determine whether they can help the team this year, but they don't want to play them just to do so if they don't feel they need to.
    • On Thayer Munford playing through injury in the second quarter of Friday's game: "It was gritty. It was tough. It shows how much he cares about his teammates."
    • Day said the Buckeyes can't spend much time worrying about what this game means or doesn't mean, just on what they need to do to get a win this week.
    • Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan "has done a really excellent job of managing that offense," Day said. He said Coan and Jonathan Taylor are the guys who get the Badgers' offense going.
    • Day said he knew Justin Fields' high school coach for a long time and by the time Fields entered the transfer portal, Ohio State already had a pretty good idea of what Fields could bring to the program.
    • On getting to know Ohio State's administration and boosters: "The people around here are great. I love some of the people that we deal with here."
    • On this week's game against Wisconsin: "These guys are physical. We're going to have to bring it in every single way ... You cannot let one get away, but this one's going to be as hard as it gets." Day said he believes the Badgers will have "something to prove" coming off their loss to Illinois last week.
    • Day said Mike Yurcich brings "big time" value to Ohio State's offensive game planning. "He's always got great ideas."
    • Day acknowledges there hasn't been any big point of adversity Ohio State has had to overcome this year, but said there are always things that come up week-to-week that they have to work through.
    • Day said he does view this game as a "benchmark" to see how good Ohio State's offense really is because the Buckeyes are going up against the nation's top-ranked defense.
    • Day said his wife said, "Tough first quarter," after Ohio State's win against Northwestern. He said he looked at the stats and saw the Buckeyes had scored a touchdown four minutes into the game. "The standard's pretty high around here."
    • Day said the Buckeyes have confidence that they can move the ball going into any game, because they believe they are one of the best offenses in the country, but that's not to downplay how good Wisconsin's defense is.
    • On Nicholas Petit-Frere's performance against Northwestern: "He didn't have a perfect game. He didn't grade a champion. But he competed the best he could ... it's good to see Nick step up."
    • Day said it will be crucial for the Buckeyes' offense to stay on schedule against Wisconsin.
    • On J.K. Dobbins: "He's very competitive, and I'm proud of the way he's prepared."
    • "The bigger the game, the more the emphasis on the plan to win." Said the Buckeyes have to play great defense, avoid turnovers, execute in the red zone and perform well in the kicking game.
    • Asked about how he would handle losing his first game whenever that happens, Day looked down and shook his head before answering. He said he expects to take losing harder as a head coach than he did as an assistant coach, so he's trying to avoid it as long as he can.
    • "The expectations here are as high as they can be."
    • Day said he thinks Fields has done a good job of reading coverages and making decisions, the receivers have done a good job spacing out their routes to get open and the pass protection has allowed them to make plays.
    • Day said arm strength is really more about footwork than how physically strong your arm is, and Fields does an excellent job of timing up his footwork to deliver the ball downfield.
    • Why is Jonathan Taylor good? "Why isn't he good?" Day listed off a number of positive traits that Taylor has. "He's kind of an all-purpose back."
    • Day said he "didn't have a lot of expectations" for Master Teague going into the season, but said Teague provides a good change of pace and has done a good job of lowering his pads and running hard when he gets into the game.

    97.1 THE FAN
    RYAN DAY
    ON EXECUTING ON THIRD-AND-LONG
    • "Early in the game, sometimes it's hard to crack the rock."
    • "Early in the game, when you get off schedule, you have to do a great job on third and long."
    • Ryan Day praised everyone's ability to recognize what they were doing on third down.
ON FORCING A PUNT AND GETTING POINTS BEFORE THE HALF
    • "If we got it inside the five-yard line, we were going to be aggressive and use our time outs."
    • Day said they went after the block, but didn't get it.
    • Day praised the protection on Blake Haubeil's 55 yarder, noting that all 11 defenders rushed to block it, which is rare.
WHAT'S THE LONGEST YOU WOULD CONSIDER ATTEMPTING?
    • 55 yards is probably around the limit.
    • Day said he would take the wind and playing surface into account.
    • "You would have thought we won the super bowl right there," Ryan Day said of the celebration for the field goal.
