Game 9 | October 27, 2007 University Park, PA Beaver Stadium Game Time: 8:00 PM ET on ABC. #1 Ohio State (8-0, 4-0) vs. Penn State (6-2, 3-2) This will be one of our toughest games this season. We'll be playing in a very difficult surrounding and their crowd will be amped. We must play smart, hard nosed football. We must limit turnovers AND win the turnover margin. Get at PSU early and I think we have a very good chance at winning.
I'm more worried about the PSU fans than I am the actual team. Just take Dan Connor out of the game as much as you can and I think we can move the ball with no problem. Defensively we should stop the run with no problem and as long as Malcom Jenkins doesn't let Derrick Williams out his sight, we should shut down PSU's passing game. OL needs to practice focus this week. It's going to be very loud.
I really think this game comes down to which teams offense doesn't lose the game for them. I just can't see PSU having any luck moving the ball on us. OSU should be able to pressure Morelli and he can be rattled very easily. I think OSU will have a hard time sustaining drives against PSU in that atmosphere. Special teams will also be a big part of the game deciding field position. It won't be easy but OSU will find a way to get it done. OSU 20 PSU 10
PSU fans I've talked to have said that OSU id far better and more balanced than PSU. They said that if Morelli has a good game then PSU has a chance to pull the upset, but if he has a bad game then it could be a blowout. I agree with bucksrule2729 OSU- 20 PSU- 10 Also, I think we will score on our first two drives as we have almost all season.
Jtothero I think you hit on another key point. It would be huge if OSU can put points on the board early and help calm the crowd down. The longer we let them have hope the louder the stadium will be. I think this will be a great test to see if we can run the ball well against PSU.
I agree, They did a great time holding Dorian Bryant who is a much better receiver and a multi pupose threat to 2 catches for -4 yards.
If the team plays Tressel-ball and take care of the football, then advantage the best defense in the land. If the offense decides to give them some freebies then we are in for a fight. Don't give the crowd anything to cheer about and its game over.
Tressel-Ball To Buckeye Goon -- you haven't noticed that Coach Tressel does not play "tressel-ball" this year until the mid-4th quarter when the game is already in hand? In fact, this moniker "tressel ball" needs to go away. Jim tressel has always played to his team's strengths. This year, the Bucks look to take advantage of man-to-man press coverage by letting the deep balls rip down the sidelines. That's how we beat PSU, by sticking to our strengths.
Point taken tortfeasor, man you sure know how to make a first ever post on this board... just rip on BuckeyeGoon ROFL 'tis all good I can handle it And btw I do agree with you that Tressel plays to his team's strengths, I guess when I say "Tressel ball" I mean control the clock, take care of the ball, no turnovers, and let your insane D take control of the game. Personally I like the moniker, I know some have ripped that style of play as being ultra conservative, safe, passive, etc. Those people obviously have never watched an entire Ohio State football game.
Tressel-Ball If "Tressel-Ball" means winning big games, then I'll stick with it. However, I don't think that's what people think when they use the term. What they're actually referring to is "Beamer-Ball" or possibly "Solich-Ball" if there is such a thing. I equate the latter to stubborness and dogma rather than reasoned game planning. 2006: 3 and 1 from the Mich. 1 yard line and Tressel lines up with an empty backfield and throws a Roy Hall for a TD. In 2002 (with you-know-who #13) in the backfield, there's no way Tressel calls a pass play in that situation. The guy plays to his strengths...which doesn't bother me b/c Tressel is easily the smartest coach he ever plays against. Peace Out Buckeye Goon!
I think when people refer to Tressel Ball they mean run, run, run (or short yard pass keeping things conservative) and if you can't get the 1st down that's fine. We'll use our best weapons in our punting game and rely on our defense to stop the opposition. This season and last definetly has not been "Tressel Ball" type of play. Different style of play calling and like you guys have said different strengths on this team compared to 2002.
TE Was anyone else shocked to see the Bucks throw to tight-ends (on purpose) against MSU? I'd like to see more out and drag routes thrown to the tight ends to keep the PSU linebackers from spying close to the line of scrim. Also, the screen pass to Maurice Wells looks like it could have success against Penn State linebackers if they start over-pursuing, per usual. I couldn't believe South Florida did not try something similar when his QB was getting pummeled by blitzing Rutgers linebackers.
if there is anything i would like to see is us when the coin toss. i would like to see our defense on the field first. set the tone of the game and dictate how that first half is going to be played. we have to take that crowd out of the game early. we can't do what we did in 05'. osu i thought had the better team but early mistakes put the defense in bad positions. it wasn't till late in the game the team started to click. but by that time is was too late. we have to get an early lead and then let our defense win it for us. hopefully, there are no turnovers. i agree that special teams is going to be a big factor in this game. i circled this game before the start of the season. this game will test the character of this team. beaver stadium is a very tough place to play in but this will be a good one. osu 24 - 10 Go Bucks!!!
Statement game I feel it's time for an OSU statement game. Penn State does not have the weapons to score on our D and Beanie is going to get his yards up the gut. I think we see a lot less mo wells up the middle, but more screen passes to stretch out the d so we can bring beanie back in for the rough stuff. We take the crowd out early and we rumble on to victory, and when College Football Final begins, they once again don't talk about us as we just go about our business. OSU: 31 PSU: 13
You guys hit it, i believe crowd control is very important along with special teams, getting good field position is key
