Marshall and Junior rush for 360 yards to win in their season opener.

Everhart's debut as Middletown coach a thriller
Marshall and Junior rush for 360 yards to win in their season opener.
    By Rick Cassano
    Staff Writer

The Middies opened the 2011 season in exhilarating fashion Saturday night in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown, getting a combined 360 yards on the ground from Jalin Marshall and E.J. Junior while holding off Huber Heights Wayne 32-31 at Welcome Stadium.
    . . .
Marshall, a junior quarterback, ran 38 times for 191 yards and a touchdown. It was his 4-yard TD jaunt and conversion run that put Middletown ahead 32-25 with 2:19 remaining.
    . . .
Marshall said the atmosphere two highly regarded teams, a raucous crowd, a back-and-forth contest was amazing. And he praised Wayne for its physicality.

I love my fans and I love my team, Marshall said. That's why we played hard to the last whistle. We got the win. I get to go home tonight and sleep.

Marshall is one of just eight 5~stars so far for class of '13

    Jalin Marshall

Vitals: Athlete/Quarterback, Middletown (Ohio) High School, 6-0/190

Why he’s a five-star: Though he plays quarterback in high school, we feel Marshall projects best to wide receiver or defensive back on the next level and his 1,400-plus yards rushing from under center is a good indication of why. One of the most exciting players in the class of 2013 with the ball in his hands, Marshall is incredibly creative and has the versatility to hurt opponents in numerous ways.

Recruitment: Currently, Marshall lists Notre Dame and Ohio State as his top two programs but has offers from around the country and his list is growing. Ohio State has always been a favorite for Marshall but the Irish have found themselves firmly in the mix in his recruitment.

    The first five-stars for 2013

    Scout.com: Midwest Region: Early 2013 5-Stars

    Scout.com Analysts on Jalin Marshall
Bill Greene: "Well, when we watched him last year, he was smaller than he is now, and he played in a spread all over the field. He was in the shotgun, and he did a lot of magical things. We saw him the other night and his team is triple option now, two tight ends, and he takes shots now. He got killed the other night. 30 carries and not to the sideline, it was bunched up tight and he played like a tailback. 30 carries, 200 yards, and he took shots. His toughness was on display. He's a kid where, you must tackle him. If you miss, it could be over. He's so talented as an offensive player. He's one of the most exciting I've ever seen. He could go 50 yards in the blink of an eye. He's so special and he's strong, which is what I didn't come across last year. He's 190-lbs, but he can move. He's so quick. I don't know where you play him at the next level, but he's going to change numbers on the scoreboard wherever he plays."

Dave Berk: First off, his elusiveness. He's able to take it in for a score any time he touches the football. The thing we saw Saturday night was his toughness. The offense has changed from a spread attack where he had room to work with to a triple option where he's in control of the ball and he's going to take a beating. He was strong enough to take the pounding. He was still standing. I feel he's going to be a running back or wide receiver. He has to be on the offensive side of the ball, because he's so good with the ball in his hands. I don't see him as a quarterback now because of the change in the offense. He threw the ball three times the other night.

BN$--Marshall Reacts To Ohio State Win

Jalin was able to speak to every coach on staff except Coach Fickell, was very impressed with the way Coach Fickell handled Game 1, and noticed how the offense was tailored to the personnel.

    Jalin Marshall - Ath, 6-0, 190, Middletown
Coming off a camp season where his quarterback stock dropped but his athlete stock went through the roof, Marshall remains the top player in the class. He is a game changing athlete. I will mention once again that he reminds me of DeSean Jackson, the Philadelphia Eagles receiver. I understand he prefers quarterback but I do not think he is going to let that influence his decision too much. I like the Buckeyes here.

I don't se that comparison at all...Marshall compares more to Percy Harvin or Josh Cribbs. DeSean Jackson will never weigh over 180 pounds. Marshall will play at the next level somewhere between 200 and 210. Jackson is more of a straight-line speed guy while Marshall has speed but has a lot more lateral quickness. Maybe he meant to say Jeremy Maclin from the Eagles. That makes sense...
