Smith makes statement in all-star game....................Devin Smith isn't publicly perceived as one of the gems of Ohio State's most recent recruiting class. But if the Ohio North-South Classic is any indication, that could change once he steps foot on campus. His teammates gave him a nickname - one Smith hopes will only be temporary.

Smith ran a 10.63 in the 100m at the District Track Meet in Canton this past weekend............Smith is now around 6'3 and 210 pounds............not to mention he is the State Champion in the long jump................

If he gets everything mentally he could be a weapon............speed, vertical jump...........

Just for comparison...........Brandon Saine ran the 100m in 10.38..............

WR Corey Brown ran a 10.54 100m in high school.............

D-Smooth has bulked up to 210lbs! Damn. He could end up being a really good one. He's kind of under the radar but he seems to compare to Posey to me or even Robo. If he has really good hands, we might see him not only contribute as a freshman, he could start. We have a problem right now with our WRs dropping passes and with Posey out for the first 5 games, maybe Smith steps up. It's ok to have one receiver that occasionally has the droppsies, but not all of them. I think D-Smooth and Verlon Reed will get more PT than most people expect.

Mr. Smith Goes to Columbus..................Smith was in Columbus a few weeks ago and Smith captured the 100-meter dash, with an time of 10.73. He followed that by winning the state long-jump championship, with a winning jump of 24 feet, 7 inches, setting a stadium record in the event.

It seems more and more clear that Verlon Reed and Philly Brown are set to be the top two receivers while DeVier Posey is out. Chris Fields looks like the slot guy when they go to three-wide, although both Jake Stoneburner and Jordan Hall saw time in the slot today.

The guy to watch out for is Devin Smith. The 6-3 freshman out of Massillon has been one of the most impressive players on the field during the first two days of camp. He catches everything that comes his way, including a great over his back-shoulder grab today.

Evan Spencer also looks good in the early going, but don't be surprised if Smith is pushing Fields for that slot receiver role with the first group.

    Smith making an impression

    COLUMBUS DISPATCH

With DeVier Posey suspended for the first five games, Ohio State needs receivers to emerge quickly.
Freshman Devin Smith looks to be doing just that. At 6 feet 3, he has good size and has shown soft hands and excellent speed the first few days of camp.
“He’s super explosive, and he’s a tough kid,†receivers coach Stan Drayton said. “He comes from a great program in Massillon at Washington (High School), and he’s bringing that skill set here. He still has a lot of learning to do. But what he’s bringing from a God-given ability is phenomenal for this program.â€

    SMITH IS SPECIAL

    Quote:
SMITH IS SPECIAL Usually a freshman or two stand out during the first week of fall camp each season, and this year is no exception.

Devin Smith a 6-foot-3, 190-pound wide receiver from Massillon has certainly impressed. The true freshman has exhibited all the attributes you look for in a receiver: big, fast, great hands, play-maker. He's also shown the poise of a three-year vet and could be pushing for playing time sooner, rather than later.

Our goal is to put the best 11 on the football field, Drayton said. We don't care if you're 2 years old or 18, 19 or 20 years old. We want the best 11 out there and if Devin can prove that he's deserving of that, he's going to be out on that football field helping us win some ball games.

    So far, he's proven deserving.

Massillon's Devin Smith catching on as Ohio State receiver

Massillon's Devin Smith catching on as Ohio State receiver

    COLUMBUS

Football is not a thinking man's game. Not in the battle, on the field when bodies are flying and being pummeled.

Devin Smith is learning that, and the sooner he is able to play without thinking, the sooner he will be on the field at Ohio Stadium helping 18th-ranked Ohio State. The Washington High School graduate is one of two freshman receivers head coach Luke Fickell is counting on to make an impact this season.

The Buckeyes may not have much choice. DeVier Posey, who would have been this year's top receiver, has to sit out the first five games as part of his NCAA tattoo-gate punishment. Posey caught 53 passes for 848 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Add the fact that leading receiver Dane Sanzenbacher graduated, and there is cause for concern.

Smith caught 60 passes for 1,130 yards and nine TDs at Massillon last year. He did not enroll early at Ohio State and has had just three weeks to get up to speed on the playbook, routes and terminology.

Devin came in and got off to a little bit of a slow start, not from a lack of effort, but when you've got that big playbook in front of you and you're trying to figure out terminology, you play slow trying to figure things out, Ohio State first-year wide receivers coach Stan Drayton said. Now he's starting to get comfortable with some of the plays, and you can see his confidence show in his play. In particular, our scrimmage (Saturday) when he took the game to another speed. That?s an indication he?s starting to get comfortable.

    SMITH WILL PLAY

    SMITH WILL PLAY

Right now it appears about the only thing that will keep Massillon wide receiver Devin Smith off the field on Saturdays with the Buckeyes is health. Smith is healthy and taking repetitions with the first and second team offense. He could be in line for a great deal of playing time as the No. 3 wide receiver. He still needs to make progress in understanding the playbook.

    Devin Smith

    #15 Freshman, WR

    6’3†190 lbs.

Devin Smith has been extremely impressive during camp. He combines great size, great hands, great speed, quick learning, and above average route running.

Smith unsurprisingly worked his way up to the second team during camp, and he may see the field in games.

Only a freshman in what will be a limited passing attack, Devin Smith’s best years are certainly ahead of him, but between Smith and Evan Spencer, the future at receiver is in great shape.
