The Celtics didn’t trade up in tonight’s NBA draft, instead staying put and rolling the dice with the 21st pick. They certainly took a gamble, picking Ohio State power forward Jared Sullinger.
The skilled big man averaged 17.6 points and 9.3 rebounds last season as a sophomore, but plummeted down draft boards as he was tagged with a medical red flag by NBA doctors regarding his back. That carries risk, but this far down in the draft it was worth it for the Celtics to take a chance on a top-10 talent.
The 6-foot-9, 265-pounder has been compared favorably to former Celtic Glen Davis. Sullinger has great touch in the post and hits the boards.
