Part of me thinks Browns should help, would be great publicity. However, the Browns didn't give him the drugs or booze. It's like blaming the spoon for making you fat

ABOUT THE BROWNS 1. I will be relieved when training camp begins, because I'm sick of all the "Where's Johnny This Weekend?" reporting. I've ignored nearly all of it. We'll see how Manziel actually plays. That will be one of the verdicts on what he did this summer. 2. That said, I expect Brian Hoyer to look better than Manziel in training camp and the preseason. Being a rookie quarterback is tough duty, as Manziel will learn. And Hoyer continues to make an excellent recovery from knee surgery. He was very solid in the spring practices. 3. But another rookie matters more when it comes to winning a starter's job. That's cornerback Justin Gilbert, the team's top pick in June, No. 8 overall. The Browns traded down rather than select receiver Sammy Watkins. They made that deal with Buffalo knowing Josh Gordon was facing a suspension, and they had a desperate need for a receiver. They made it because they liked adding a first-round pick from the Bills in 2015. 4. But most of all, they made that trade because they believe Gilbert is ready to start right now. Cornerbacks are so important to Pettine's defense because he demands his cornerbacks be excellent 1-on-1 defenders. They don't receive a lot of help in a scheme that puts the accent on pressuring the quarterback. 5. The Browns signed Joe Haden to a $68 million deal with $43 million guaranteed. Gilbert is supposed to control the other side. Gilbert is one of the few first rounders yet to sign, but the new labor agreement usually means everyone is signed by the start of camp. 6. In spring practices, Pettine often had veteran Buster Skrine playing ahead of Gilbert. The main reason seemed to be that Pettine wants rookies to earn starting jobs, and veterans receive the first chance. But fans know Skrine has some problems on the outside. He tends to look good in spring practices and training camp. It's the regular season that exposes his weaknesses. 7. Skrine has been effective covering slot receivers. For the Browns to have the elite defense they seek, Gilbert needs to take control of that starting spot by the opener -- with Skrine as the nickel back. 8. Pettine says a team needs a lot of running backs, pass rushers and cornerbacks. The Browns drafted corner Pierre Desir in the fourth round, and he had some nice moments in the spring. They brought in veterans Aaron Berry and Royce Adams -- both have played for Pettine. 9. Lost in all this is Leon McFadden, the team's third-round pick by former GM Mike Lombardi in 2013. He was expected to play quite a bit last season, but looked overwhelmed. He was not seeing much action with the regulars in the spring. But he is another corner. So is Isaiah Trufant, a veteran who also played for Pettine with the Jets. But the 31-year-old veteran is expected to be mostly used on special teams. 10. The Browns had the No. 8 defense against the pass last season -- which sounds good. But they allowed 29 TD passes, 21st in the league. A big key to any pass defense is keeping the other team out of the end zone. That was a problem.

Just get the ruling over with already. This has dragged on long enough. Can't wait to get camp started to get some actual football going. Been far to long
