hahahaha, I never saw that play, thats hilarious.

I love Lighty, my best experience in talking to a player in person was with him. I was walking down Neil Ave. right behind Lighty, and this really goofy looking kid walking towards us points at him in a grandiose fashion and says "I know you, haven't you been here like 6 years?" (Lighty was a soph.) And he just kinda laughed and said, "Huh? No, 2" The weird guy went on, saying "I've seen you, I think on TV, what sport do you play?" Then after Lighty answered him he asked one of the most awkward questions I've ever heard, "Are you one of the good ones?"

Lighty just laughed and said "I dunno, I hope so."
After that I went up to Lighty as we were waiting to cross the street and said "Isn't basketball that one with the big orange ball? Not the lemon-shaped ball, the circular one."
He cracked up and said "yeah thats the one."

Jet-lagged from a trans-Atlantic flight home from Serbia, David Lighty nevertheless had an appointment to keep.

He was back from duty with USA Basketball's under-19 team, Dave Richardson reasoned, so the Buckeye was running.

"I had the team running a mile the next morning," said Richardson, the strength and conditioning coach for the Ohio State men's basketball team. "I told Dave, 'Hey, man, you've got to be here for the mile.' "

What Lighty didn't know until that morning two years ago was that Sarah Schulze also was there. The incoming freshman on the OSU women's basketball team was a two-time Ohio high school cross-country champion and a state runner-up in the 1,600 meters.

"I told Lighty, 'This girl's going to kick your (butt),' " Richardson said, "and he said, 'Coach, she's not beating me.'

"He beat her," Richardson said. "He ran like a 5:08 or something. He hadn't trained in a month, just got off a 20-hour flight, got on the track and ran a 5:08 because he was not going to let that girl beat him.

"That's one of the greatest stories ever right there. But that's the kind of guy he is. He has the will to win. He wasn't going to lose. He died. He laid on the ground after that. But he wasn't going to lose."

David Lighty propelled Ohio State to a 72-59 win over Cleveland State last Tuesday on the strength of a career-high 30 points.
Beginning with his dunk at 13:12 in the second half, the ESPN Top Play of the Day, Lighty ignited the Buckeyes to a 16-6 run with the junior forward scoring 15 of OSUâ€™s 16 points during a 5:47 stretch.

During preseason practices, Ohio State men's basketball coach Thad Matta said his defensive stopper would always drain his long-distance jumpers, and he'd say it some more.
"40."

What did it mean?

"If he could shoot 40 percent from 3," Matta said, "we'd have a chance to have a really good basketball team."

Lighty had never done it before, never come close really, making 20 percent of his 3-pointers as a freshman (Matta remembers about a two-month drought between makes), just under 33 percent as a sophomore and 26 percent in his injury-shortened 2008-09 season that led to a redshirt and another year of eligibility.

But Friday afternoon, with the No. 9 Buckeyes (22-7, 12-4) a half-game out of the Big Ten lead entering today's game with Michigan, Lighty knew just where he stood: 42.

That's 42 percent from 3-point range in Big Ten games, fifth-best in the conference, for a defensive specialist who, all told, made 28.8 percent of his 3-pointers during his first three years in Columbus.

I can see Lighty stepping up HUGE next season if Turner/Buford leave, Lighty's attitude and defense are outstanding and it's great that when he needs to he can drive the ball without issues.

Ohio State swingman David Lighty captains 11th annual All-Glue Team

During his first week of practice as an Ohio State freshman, David Lighty, a 6-foot-5 swingman from Cleveland, was so dominant in a full-court, zig-zag defensive drill that he nearly brought the exercise to a halt. "He was turning the guy over and over. The line of guys going next was all backed up," Ohio State coach Thad Matta recalls. Though it was early in Lighty's college career, Matta sensed the kid could be something special. "I told him right there, 'I've never seen anything like that. If you play your cards right, you could be the best defender who ever played at Ohio State.' " Matta says.

That was a huge compliment, but it is not the sort that a freshman usually likes to hear. After all, Lighty was a big-time scorer at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High. He once put up 50 points in a game, he averaged nearly 28 points a game as a senior and as a result was ranked by Scout.com as the No. 30 player in his class. But Lighty was also smart enough to realize that when you come to college with a class that includes Mike Conley Jr., Daequan Cook and Greg Oden, your best chance at earning playing time is not going to be as a scorer. So he had to find other ways to make himself valuable.

In other words, he had to turn himself into a Glue Guy.

â€œWith us losing (the championship game) last year, a game we could have won, especially without me playing, I really wanted to come out and win,â€ said the fourth-year junior who missed all but the first seven games of last season with a broken foot.

Lighty gave brief thought to NBA
While Evan Turner's departure to the NBA was considered likely and there were some murmurs about the possibility of William Buford testing the waters, little if any speculation was given to David Lighty leaving early.

Not that he came close to forgoing his final year of eligibility, but Lighty said today that the thought at least crossed his mind.

"A little bit. Not too much," he said following Turner's news conference. "I looked into it a little bit. His decision was a little harder than mine."

Lighty said he discussed the possibility with his family before dropping the idea and beginning preparations for his senior season.

"Iâ€™ll probably think about entering the draft next year," he quipped.

Instant Impact: Assessing Lightyâ€™s Injury

At this point David Lighty has got to be asking himself â€œwhy me?â€ A good kid and a better teammate, Lighty is nothing short of the heart and soul of the current Ohio State basketball team, and yet he canâ€™t seem to catch a break.

Or more accurately he seems to be catching too many of them.

While practicing with his teammates in the auxiliary gym at the Schottenstein Center Tuesday, Lighty fractured a bone in his left foot. According to Head Coach Thad Matta, X-rays revealed it was the fifth metatarsal, which is the same bone Lighty fractured in the seventh game of his junior season; an injury that cost him the rest of the year.

According to a statement released by Ohio State, Lighty will have surgery on Friday, just 17 months after having pin inserted into his left foot in December 2008. Recovery time is 10-12 weeks, which means the injury will cost Lighty most of the off-season with his teammates. A three-month recovery would put the fifth-year senior back on the court in mid-August, just enough time to get back into the flow before the Buckeyes start practice in mid-September.

What Does it Mean for Lighty?

Letâ€™s start by saying that we are not doctors, but breaking the same bone in his foot for the second time in less than two years cannot be a good thing for Lighty. Even when the injury re-heals, there is probably going to be more hesitancy on Lightyâ€™s part this time around knowing that he could re-injure it and be done for three months again at any moment.

I heard prior to his injury that Matta was focused on Lighty taking over for Turner at the point and filling the same role................all indications are that once he recovers, they will continue to work on Lighty at the point.............
