Ohio St. dismisses two defensive backs

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- New Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has dismissed two players for off-the-field problems.

Ohio State spokesman Jerry Emig confirmed Sunday that defensive backs Dominic Clarke and DerJuan Gambrell have been released from their scholarships.

Clarke, a redshirt sophomore from Frederick, Md., has been charged with drunken driving and also had been arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct after allegedly discharging a BB gun on campus. No one was hurt in the latter incident.

Gambrell, a freshman from Toledo, was also discharged for a "violation of team rules," but Ohio State did not specify what that violation was.

It sucks that this is our front page news the day after OSU dominated Indiana, but it's relevant and it's football.

I like how Meyer sent them packing. We need a no-nonsense environment in the program.

I think I'm in the minority in thinking that Gambrell had a bigger up-side, but it doesn't matter now..

So our secondary is going to need some shaping up with losing three guys and a coach.

The secondary unit just became a priority in recruiting and that is the reason we have seen more offers to defensive backs in the past week.............

I believe we had about a dozen under-classmen scholarship DBs during the season, if anybody else screws up (Pitt Brown) we could start getting thin quick.

To me, it's similar to last off-season with RBs and LBers.

We thought we were loaded at RB, Boom got suspended, J. Hall got suspended, Berry was Berry, and at one point were down to only an unproven Hyde and Smith.

At LBer, we were loaded heading into the off-season, Ejaun Price never enrolled, we then lost Connor Crowell to injury, Dorian Bell transferred, Jordan Whiting was suspended and in the dog-house, we lost OLB/DE Nate Williams to a season ending injury and all of the sudden we were thin at Linebacker.

I wouldn't worry too much about our depth at DB right now, but it's definitely worth keeping an eye on.
