Ohio State offers St. Louis defensive back
The Buckeyes have offered Desmet (St. Louis) 2021 defensive back Jakailin Johnson, a 4-star cornerback ranked as the country’s fifth-best player at the position in his cycle.

Johnson was offered by Buckeyes receivers coach Brian Hartline, who saw the 6-foot, 160-pound cornerback at a satellite camp outside of St. Louis on Friday evening. Hartline had actually begun his recruitment of Missouri’s second-ranked rising-junior prospect a few weeks back when he stopped by Desmet, the home of the 2020 Notre Dame wide receiver commitment Jordan Johnson.

“It feels great,” the cornerback prospect told Lettermen Row. “Ohio State is one of my dream schools. Coach Hartline said they want me to come over and visit and I’m going there on June 21.”

BUCKEYES A FINALIST FOR MISSOURI CORNER
Ohio State is already on the way to landing one of the country's best defensive backs classes in 2020. With the attrition expected to come at the position after this season, it will be imperative for the Buckeyes to follow that up with another strong 2021 class.

On Thursday night, junior cornerback Jakailin Johnson out of St. Louis announced on his Instagram that Ohio State is in his top six, which also includes Georgia, Florida, Oregon, Notre Dame and Oklahoma.

Johnson, the top-ranked junior in Missouri, is the No. 6-ranked corner in the country and the nation's No. 69-ranked overall player.

The 6-foot, 168-pounder is a ball-hawking, fast-closing corner who isn't afraid of contact or laying a hit down and doesn't give up on plays.

As with a few other targets who have recently included Ohio State on their final lists, the feeling is that the Buckeyes are closer to the top than the bottom of Johnson's list. Johnson visited the Shoe on Oct. 5 for the Buckeyes' 34-10 win over Michigan State and could be back for another visit soon.

Johnson is one of many defensive backs the Buckeyes are gunning for in the 2021 class, also including Tony Grimes, Jaylin Davies, Hunter Washington, Derrick Davis Jr., Hunter Wohler and Jaylen Johnson.

Jakailin and Jaylen Johnson have each already visited a game this season, and so has Wohler. Grimes and Washington have visits planned.

Coach of Jakailin Johnson evaluates Coombs impact
Ryan Day told recruits, their families and coaches that they’d replace Jeff Hafley with “the best coach in America,” because that is what the expectation is and will be at a school like Ohio State.

That has been the message that Robert Steeples, the head coach at St. Louis (Mo.) Desmet has been giving to his star cornerback Jakailin Johnson in the wake of Hafley’s departure. Johnson, the country’s No. 5-ranked cornerback, may want to get used to the idea of coaches leaving because it happens all the time — something that Steeples, who played with four NFL teams as a cornerback himself, can attest to.

“I’ve told Jakailin to get familiar with the standard at the schools he’s considering,” Steeples said. “Coaches may leave, but at a place like Ohio State, the next coach will be held to that standard. That’s why you’ve got to look at the entire school.”

Johnson has been looking at Ohio State, and that’s certainly going to continue with Coombs in the fold. Steeples believes that the two-year stint in the NFL will make Coombs even better than he was before because that level requires coaches to adapt to different types of players.

“He’s been able to see so many different skill sets,” Steeples said. “They’re cycling players in and out in the NFL, so his job is not to find guys to fit him, it’s to learn how to use the talent he had. I am sure he’s much more equipped to handle different types of players at the cornerback position now than before.”

Ultimately how the relationship between Coombs and Johnson unfolds will be up to the player, though, and not Steeples. That being the case, it’s helpful that the returning assistant coach is intimately familiar with the Buckeyes.

“He comes as a highly-regarded guy at that position and has a previous relationship with the school which helps,” Steeples said. “Jakailin and I have talked about Ohio State a lot, even before it was Coach Coombs. As far as the relationship is built? It will between them.”

And what about the idea that his star cornerback could be closing in on a decision? That’s been popular fodder of late.

“Any talk about him being ready to commit?” Steeples said. “I think that’s just pure speculation.”

    3. JAKAILIN JOHNSON, CB
A list of biggest 2021 targets would not be complete without at least one cornerback, and Johnson has emerged as the priority target.

Much of that is because five-star corner Tony Grimes, the nation's top-ranked player at the position, seems to have a bunch of other schools not named Ohio State higher on his own board (like Georgia, Clemson, Penn State and Texas A&M). Looks like the Buckeyes' final chance there is if Kerry Coombs can make a strong impression on him, which we can't rule out for obvious reasons.

That brings us to Johnson, a four-star CB from St. Louis and one who had the Buckeyes in his top six back when Jeff Hafley was still coaching.

Brian Hartline and Matt Barnes visited Johnson this past week, and it's becoming clear how much the program wants Johnson, as well as fellow cornerback targets Hunter Washington and Avante Dickerson.

From Johnson: "I still talk to all of those schools," Johnson told Rivals' Joseph Hastings of his final six schools, which includes Georgia and Oregon. "Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Florida are probably the ones I talk to the most and the ones showing the most interest. My recruiting process is still open, and I'm waiting to see what happens."

Others in serious contention: Notre Dame, Missouri, Florida ... Johnson took an unofficial visit to Ohio State for its win over Michigan State in October. He got to see the electric atmosphere, and it made an impression on him. One of Johnson's good friends and high school teammates, five-star receiver Jordan Johnson (of no relation), signed with Notre Dame in the 2020 class. He plans on visiting Ohio State, Notre Dame and Florida soon.

Other high-caliber targets: Grimes, Washington, Dickerson

Buckeyes in final list for Jakailin Johnson, Notre Dame is not
On Friday, another St. Louis standout in the Class of 2021 released his final six schools and the Buckeyes made the cut as expected. What was unexpected for some was that Notre Dame did not make the list.

Yes, the recruitment is still open for Johnson and there is plenty of time for the Irish to get back into the mix now that they’ve hired cornerbacks coach Mike Mickens away from Cincinnati but their absence is telling. Johnson plays at DeSmet High School which also produced 2020 4-star receiver Jordan Johnson. Many believed that connection would help Notre Dame eventually land the country’s No. 5-ranked cornerback.

Whether or not it was the lack of a cornerbacks coach or just a feeling from Johnson that Notre Dame wasn’t for him led to them being off of his list is unclear. What is clear, according to DeSmet coach Robert Steeples, is that the Irish picking Mickens over Steeples for that open cornerbacks position had nothing to do with it. The former NFL defensive back told Lettermen Row that there is no love lost between Notre Dame and himself.

“I have even more respect for the Notre Dame program and I see why they’ve been so successful recently,” Steeples said. “They already had an offer out to Brian Kelly’s former player [Mickens], who I’ve heard great things about before I even came to interview. It eventually came down to me and him. I completely respect Kelly’s decision and I’m grateful for the opportunity.

“JK and I have a great bond and he trusts my knowledge of the defensive backs position and my ability to develop cornerbacks, but he’s experienced that firsthand. So, of course, he would be intrigued by playing for me at the next level. You always want to go where you have a great relationship with someone. That being said, no matter where I may go or not go, I want my players to go where it is best for them personally. If that’s with me, fine, if that’s not with me, great. They know that they got me in their life no matter where they end up.”

What does it all mean for Ohio State? Ultimately, that’s unclear. The Buckeyes are in a great position with Jakailin Johnson though and the recent hiring of Kerry Coombs will only increase the odds. Buckeyes fans should expect Johnson in Columbus “at some point in the spring” according to Steeples though the data for that visit hasn’t been finalized.
