    2015 forward rescinds commitment
Mickey Mitchell, a 6-foot-7, 220-pound forward from Plano, Texas, who committed to Ohio State a year ago, rescinded that commitment last night via a post on his Twitter account.

His decision had been the subject of speculation for most of this year, since his older brother, Mike, decided to leave the Ohio State football team last winter during his freshman year. Mickey made his commitment to the basketball program while spending a week on campus visiting his brother in August 2013, during the Buckeyes’ preseason football camp.

Mike Mitchell, a linebacker, decided to transfer after being redshirted as a freshman in 2013. He did not leave school until the spring semester ended in May, however, and there was speculation that Mickey would wait until Mike left before announcing his decision. Mike Mitchell transferred to Texas Tech.

Mickey Mitchell as a high school freshman was ranked among the top 25 players nationally in his class, but knee and back injuries the past two years have taken a toll. ESPN ranked him 85th in its top 100 after this summer’s camps and AAU tournaments.

His departure leaves three commitments in the 2015 recruiting class: point guard A.J. Harris of Dayton, shooting guard Austin Grandstaff of Rockwall, Texas, and center Daniel Giddens of Mableton, Ga.

Grandstaff is a longtime friend of Mitchell, and he said they planned to visit Ohio State together for the football game against Virginia Tech on Sept.6. He reacted with surprise after Mitchell’s announcement, tweeting, “wow man” before assuring Ohio State fans they need not worry about him also leaving.

“I ain’t going no where #Buckeyes,” Grandstaff tweeted.

The void created by Mitchell also leaves the Buckeyes with three scholarships open and coaches still in pursuit of two 2015 prospects from Ohio ranked more highly than Mitchell: 6-8 Esa Ahmad of Shaker Heights and 6-9 Carlton Bragg of Cleveland Villa Angela-St.Joseph.

Ahmad, whose stock has climbed since the high school season, has visited Ohio State unofficially twice in the past four months but also plans to take visits in the next month or so to Maryland, Michigan State and Tulane. ESPN ranks him No.41 overall and the No.9 power forward in the class.

Bragg, 6-9, has been on the Buckeyes’ radar for several years and has visited campus unofficially more than once. But he has not visited recently and so far has scheduled only three visits for this fall, to Kentucky, Kansas and Illinois. ESPN ranks him No.14 overall and the No.7 power forward in the class.

If neither Ahmad nor Bragg signs with Ohio State in November, coach Thad Matta will have three scholarships to use on either late 2015 signees in the spring or prospects in the class of 2016.

This really doesn't surprise me but why did he wait as long as he did? Oh well good luck to him!

Grandstaff, Mitchell Set To Visit Ohio State
    Sep 3, 4:07 PM
Ohio State 2015 guard commit Austin Grandstaff and former Buckeyes' forward commit Mickey Mitchell will visit Columbus this weekend, Grandstaff tweeted and then later confirmed with 247Sports.

The two four-star prospects are both from the state of Texas and have struck up a friendship through the basketball circuit. When Mitchell decommitted from the Buckeyes 2015 Class in late-August, Grandstaff was shocked and upset upon hearing the news about his good friend, who had recruited him to join the OSU class back in the spring.

When asked if he was looking to get Mitchell back into the fold with a visit this weekend, the sharp-shooter replied, "I'm trying." The duo will spend time with the coaches all weekend and take in the Ohio State vs. Virginia Tech football game on Saturday night.

It seems unlikely Columbus will be the final destination for Mitchell to end up in, as it is rare for a player to go back to a school he decommits from. That being said, he's not taking the trip to Ohio State this weekend for nothing, and it is likely the staff will try to get the versatile play maker back into the fold.

Basketball prospect Mickey Mitchell of Plano, Texas, rescinded his commitment to Ohio State two weeks ago. That evidently didn’t mean much regarding his plan to take his official visit to campus this weekend.

Mitchell’s longtime friend from Rockwall, Texas, Austin Grandstaff, who remains committed to the Buckeyes for 2015, tweeted Wednesday that he and Mitchell would be in Columbus this weekend. Grandstaff later confirmed to The Dispatch that he was serious and that Mitchell would be making an official visit, which is paid for by the basketball program.

“He hasn’t taken Ohio State off his list or anything,” Grandstaff said. Mitchell decommitted, he added, because “I guess he wasn’t sure if he was going to the right place.”

Mitchell’s older brother, Mike, announced in January he was leaving the Ohio State football team, then transferred to Texas Tech in May.

Grandstaff said he doesn’t know what other schools Mickey Mitchell might be considering. Another committed 2015 recruit, point guard A.J. Harris of Dayton Dunbar, will take his official visit this weekend.

Serious respect for Mickey for being able to look past some of the stupid tweets he got after de-committing.

Just stop. We get it. The offensive line needs to improve. By the way, this is the right thread to be discussing that.

Mickey Mitchell, small forward, Plano, Texas, Plano West High School (6-8, 220 pounds)

Mitchell’s recruitment was a bit of an up and down ride, de-committing from Ohio State in August after announcing his intentions before. He decided Ohio State was the only place for him, though, after taking an official visit in September for the Virginia Tech football game. He is ranked in the top 100 of the class, averaging 13.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists his junior season.

“You look Mickey Mitchell, what position is he? I think in our system he can play four positions easily from point, to two, to three, to four,” Matta said. “He's one of those guys like an Evan Turner, he does a lot of things well and I love that about him.”

Matta also spoke about Mickey’s brother Mike, a linebacker who committed to Urban Meyer prior to the 2013 season, only to redshirt and ultimately go back home to Texas Tech in order to be closer to his family.

“I think in Mickey's situation, Mickey and Mike are two completely different kids just in terms of their personalities and that sort of thing. Not getting into a lot of detail, but Mickey went through a little bit of a tough stretch and I remember getting the phone call and I said, 'I'm cool with it, I just want what's best for you,’” Matta said. “Then once we found out the best place for Mickey was Ohio State is what he felt. We're elated to have him here. There's no doubt about that.”
