    UNDER CENTER STAGE

The most important position battle of them all will take place between redshirt sophomore Cardale Jones and redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett as they vie to be Braxton Miller's backup.

Gone is the security blanket known as Smooth Jazz leaving a guy who has thrown two collegiate passes and is most recognizable for typing "we ain't come to play SCHOOL" on his keyboard to duke it out with a guy two years removed from an ACL tear sporting zero game experience.

Jones, by default, will start as your #2 on the depth chart and while he's got the physical makeup (6'5", 250 lbs) any coach would love he looked largely stiff and unsure of himself in limited minutes a season ago. Tom Herman has been saying all the right things about Jones though I'm not sure if that's more about trying to convince any combo of himself, Jones and the rest of us that he's ready for the gig than it is dealing in reality.

Meanwhile, Herman's first quarterback recruit to Columbus, Barrett, sports Guiton-like intangibles and was a top dual-threat QB prospect rated the 11th best player in the state of Texas.

Bottom line, not a lot is known about the pair but you can bet there will come a time or two this season where how the winner of this position battle plays will determine an OSU win or loss because Braxton hasn't played an injury free season since his 2nd year of high school.

Spring Quarterback Battle Could be Important

The biggest positive for the Buckeyes about Miller being limited this spring is it gives Meyer and his staff a chance to get their first real look at backups Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett. It also gives them a chance to get some reps for true freshman Stephen Collier, but this is more about Jones and Barrett than anything else. With Kenny Guiton gone, the Buckeyes need to find a dependable No. 2 quarterback this offseason because you never know when that guy might be called upon to step in and finish a drive, or in some cases, even a game. Guiton was incredibly effective in those relief scenarios, but it’s not as easy as he made it look.

Being ready to play at a high level in the fourth quarter after standing on the sideline for the first three is a tougher mental exercise than it is physical, which is why I personally like Barrett to win the backup job at some point this offseason. Another thing to consider, however, is the fact that whoever wins that job is probably being groomed to take over for Miller as the starting quarterback next season. Jones is a physical specimen with some similarities to Terrelle Pryor. He certainly isn’t as dynamic as Pryor, but he does have some serious wheels for a guy who is 6-5 and 250 pounds. He has also shown some wiggle in the open field, but the OSU offense would be incredible one-dimensional under Jones, who is not known for being a great passer or distributor.

Barrett has been praised for his intelligence, leadership and toughness, three essential pillars of what Urban Meyer looks for in the leader of his football team. He ran for over 1,500 yards and passed for over 1,600 as a junior at Rider High School in Wichita Falls, Tex., but he suffered a nasty knee injury as a senior that kept him out of spring ball a year ago.

I'm hoping that Cardale steps up this Spring...

I'd love to see some goalline and 2-point conversion packages with him similar to what Oklahoma did with the BellDozer..

Cardale could be Truckdale in short yardage situations...

No, Urban is a pshyc major...

He just has to make sure that these guys stay on the grind...

I'm sure they're nowhere near where Urb wants them to be, but I doubt that it's a horrible situation there...

    Plus...

The great part about having so many weapons is you can throw almost any QB out there not named Bauserman and he can distribute the ball to a dozen different studs at the skill positions and let them move the chains if necessary...

    * Meyer said that quarterback Cardale Jones is still with the ones, and J.T. Barrett is backing him up. He said Barrett had a good day today, however. He also said that Jones is a changed guy from the one who was once suspended for a tweet. He said that Jones had to be a different guy and that's what he's been.

+ Neither quarterback was terribly accurate downfield today, and Cardale Jones was frequently high and long. They were doing mostly redzone work while we were watching, so Jones almost appeared confined by the close quarters. Both Jones and Barrett had nice 15-yard runs or so, with Jones' run ending in a touchdown following a nice juke of defensive end Rashad Frazier. Barrett was "tackled" at the one-yard line.
