Rakim Jarrett thrilled with Ohio State offer
The Ohio State 2020 recruiting class is off and running thanks to the recent additions of 5-star offensive tackle Paris Johnson and 4-star prospects Lejond Cavazos and Jack Miller. Cavazos and Miller have teamed up with fellow verbal Jake Wray to give Ohio State a formidable team of prep-level recruiters.

A new target for the Buckeyes has emerged following an early-week offer: wide receiver Rakim Jarrett.

Jarrett is the country’s 45th-ranked prospect and a 6-foot-tall, 182-pound athlete from Washington (D.C.) St. John’s College High School. His family roots, though, are in Ohio.

“My mom’s side of the family is from Ohio,” Jarrett told Lettermen Row. “It would kind of be like going home if I went there. I always spent the [Thanksgiving] holidays up in Canton, and that’s usually the time where Michigan and Ohio State plays each other. So, I was kind of rooting for the ‘hometown’ team. My whole family is huge Buckeyes fans.”

Because of recruiting, Jarrett is no longer rooting for any specific team — and the Ohio State offer is now his 29th. But there’s no doubt that the Buckeyes are going to be a major player in his decision, whenever it comes. He will visit Columbus for the first time at the end of July.

“I have not been to Ohio State,” he said. “They want to see me on campus, so I plan on going up later this month. The offer was kind of unexpected, but it’s great news.”

Larry Johnson was the coach who offered Jarrett, but as mentioned, there’s a group of his peers intent on getting his commitment.

“Some of the 2020 guys committed already reached out to me and said congrats and gave a small little recruiting pitch on Ohio State,” Jarrett said. “Paris Johnson said small stuff like ‘Come join the fam’ and that ‘Ohio State is the place to be.’ I haven’t talked to Jack Miller yet, but I plan on it in the near future.”

    ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE
On Monday afternoon — just one day after an exchange with a fan on Twitter in which he revealed he didn’t yet possess an offer from Ohio State — Washington D.C. St. John’s College four-star wide receiver Rakim Jarrett announced the Buckeyes made his life-long dream come true.

“It means a lot,” Jarrett told Eleven Warriors. “It’s definitely one of my dream schools. My family is from there, so it’s kind of a hometown team”

The 6-foot, 182-pound Jarrett is considered the ninth-best wide receiver and No. 45 prospect overall in the Class of 2020, as he hauled in 43 receptions for 513 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Cadets to their first Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship last fall. He now holds nearly two dozen offers from programs such as Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.

Jarrett has never been to campus in a recruiting capacity, but drove by Ohio Stadium on numerous occasions when in town to see family. He’ll make his first unofficial visit later this month when the recruiting dead period comes to a close.

“I want to see the campus and the facilities and talk to coach Smith and coach Meyer to kind of get a feel for them and how they see me in their offense in the future because they are very high on my list,” Jarrett said.

2020 WR Rakim Jarrett slowing down his recruitment?
Ohio State’s 2020 recruiting class has been on fire this summer, and there was a lot of smoke signaling the potential addition of Washington (D.C.) St. John’s College High School’s Rakim Jarrett in the near future.

That may not happen now. At least not right away.

Jarrett took to Twitter on Thursday, asking people to read his “bio.” Why? Because it now reads “Recruitment 100% Open.”

That is a departure from Jarrett’s own words from just about 10 days ago, when he posted a Top-4 list on Twitter. There was no set plan to commit to Ohio State when he visits the school next weekend, but as noted, there was a lot of talk about it. So why back off the top four?

“I want to commit soon,” Jarrett told Lettermen Row. “But it’ll probably happen after the football season. A school or two were creeping out and a few schools are really gaining my attention. My mom and I came to the conclusion that it’s still very early.”

That is certainly true. With almost 18 months before he can make anything official, Jarrett has plenty of time to sort his options.

Ohio State, Alabama, Florida State and Penn State were his top four, and that group is still the most likely to produce his chosen school.

    MOTHER KNOWS BEST
As mentioned in yesterday’s edition of The Hurry Up, Ohio State welcomed a trio of very talented prospects from Washington D.C. St. John’s College. That includes five-star linebacker Mekhail Sherman, four-star wide receiver Rakim Jarrett and four-star defensive tackle Tre Williams.

The Buckeyes have been viewed as the favorite to land the 6-foot, 182-pound Jarrett — who is considered the seventh-best wide receiver and No. 46 prospect overall in the Class of 2020 — from the moment defensive line coach and area recruiter Larry Johnson extended an offer earlier this month. This was his first time on campus in a recruiting capacity, however.

“It was great,” Jarrett told Eleven Warriors. “It exceeded my expectations, from coach [Brian] Hartline to the academics, Real Life Wednesdays and how the team interacts. It really is a brotherhood.”

Jarrett and his teammates received a tour of campus and the facilities, including Ohio Stadium and the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. He also hung out with head coach Urban Meyer, interim wide receivers coach Brian Hartline and wide receiver Austin Mack — who whooped him in NBA 2K18 by 43 points.

“They just told me about the opportunities I have by coming to Ohio State and how they would use me in their offense,” Jarrett said.

It was a huge first weekend on the job for Hartline — who was promoted from within after Meyer fired long-time receivers coach Zach Smith amid domestic abuse allegations — with Jarrett and Michigan wideouts Devell Washington and Rashawn Williams visiting. It would appear he made a great first impression.

“He’s a very exciting guy that has a lot of knowledge about the game,” Jarrett said. “I believe he’s going to be a great coach for Ohio State, and I don’t have to worry about him leaving anytime soon. According to him, he’s there to stay.”

Jarrett recently listed Ohio State in his Top 4 alongside Alabama, Florida State and Penn State, but has since backed off that and reopened his recruitment to all schools at his mother’s urging. Even so, it’s clear the Buckeyes are going to be hard to beat moving forward.

“They’re at the top [of the list],” Jarrett said, noting how he wants to get his mom on the phone with Meyer and then up to a game this fall — likely the season finale against Michigan.

All that said, Jarrett seems like he’s going to heed her advice about taking the process slowly. He doesn’t have a decision timeline in mind, but said he’ll make one whenever his mom is comfortable.

    4-star wide receiver Rakim Jarrett

“It was great. I’ve always wanted to visit and it was shocking that I was finally there as a recruit. I still had to be focused on what they have to offer me as far as an education and football. What stood out to me was a program they have called ‘Real life Wednesdays.’ It’s a program that helps guys gets internships and jobs after they leave Ohio State. That was eye opening because football ends for us all some day. It helps makes us better for when that happens, and helps you know how to do a better job of pursuing that when it’s over.”
