TEAMMATES AGAIN? Though it’s not a state Ohio State traditionally recruits, Tennessee could soon be a burgeoning pipeline to Columbus. The Buckeyes signed Franklin four-star offensive tackle Max Wray and Murfreesboro Blackman four-star running back Master Teague III last cycle, and have offers out to 11 other rising seniors in the Volunteer State. Another prospect who could soon join them is four-star cornerback Adonis Otey, who was a former teammate of Teague’s. “I hope they do because they have a great tradition and a big-time program,” Otey told Eleven Warriors. The 6-foot, 175-pound Otey is considered the 28th-best cornerback and No. 310 prospect overall in the Class of 2019, as he recorded 22 tackles and a handful of pass break ups for the Blaze last season. He actually picked up some of the slack on offensive when Teague went down with an ankle injury a few games into the season, as well, and rushed for 131 yards and four touchdowns. A one-time Tennessee commit, Otey holds more than a dozen offers from programs such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and South Carolina. He's never been to campus, but running backs coach and area recruiter Tony Alford has invited him to attend the Spring Game in April, at which time he hopes to meet with new cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson.
Ohio State offers Adonis Otey, teammate of Master Teague Ohio State hasn’t been a powerhouse in recruiting Tennessee, but the Buckeyes have picked up steam in the state under area recruiter and Buckeyes running backs coach Tony Alford. Ohio State landed running back Master Teague and offensive tackle Max Wray from the state in the 2018 class, both early enrollees, and they’re looking to dip into Tennessee again in 2019. Teague hails from Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Blackman, one of the more talented high schools in the state at the moment. The Buckeyes had previously offered 2019 Blackman wide receiver Trey Knox, but now he’s joined with an Ohio State offer by teammate Adonis Otey, a corner who landed his Buckeyes offer on Tuesday. “My reaction was just like, ‘Wow, I got that offer?’ I talk to Coach Grinch and Coach Alford and we have a pretty good relationship. They’re cool guys,” Otey said. “The thing I like most about Ohio State is just that they send a lot of players to the NFL.” Otey hasn’t yet visited Ohio State, but he’ll be able to lean on his teammates for knowledge of the program and the Columbus area. Teague is already enrolled at Ohio State and Knox has visited the campus multiple times over the last year and a half. “I really haven’t talked to [Teague] because he’s been trying to get adjusted to the college life, but I’m sure we’ll catch up about it soon. I’ve talked with [Knox] about Ohio State and he loves it up there,” Otey said. “He tells me I need to come up for a visit. We’ve talked about playing together sometimes.” That visit should be coming together in the near future, likely in April, per the 6-foot, 175-pound cornerback. Ohio State hasn’t yet cracked Otey’s top schools list, but the visit could be a chance to change that. “Right now, I’m liking Alabama, Oklahoma, Louisville and Arkansas, but that’s subject to change as more teams offer. I’ll be visiting South Carolina, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio State over the next couple months,” Otey said. “I want to make a commitment by the start of my senior season.”

Adonis Otey arrives soon On Thursday, Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Blackman cornerback Adonis Otey arrives at Ohio State for an unofficial visit. It will be the first trip to Columbus for Otey, who was offered by the Buckeyes on Feb. 27. He’s the high school teammate of freshman Ohio State running back Master Teague and 2019 wide receiver Trey Knox, who also holds a Buckeyes offer and visited on April 5. Otey is ranked as the No. 312 prospect overall and No. 29 cornerback in the 2019 class. Alabama, Tennessee, Florida State, Oklahoma, Louisville and Michigan are few of the other prominent offers for the 6-foot, 175-pound Otey.

GREEK GOD OF LOCKDOWN DEFENSE A trio of talented prospects from Tennessee made their way to Ohio State for a one-day camp on Friday afternoon, including Murfreesboro Blackman four-star cornerback Adonis Otey. “It was great,” Otey told Eleven Warriors. “They seemed to love me.” The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Otey — a former teammate of Buckeyes freshman running back Master Teague III — worked out with co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Alex Grinch and cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson. He also met with head coach Urban Meyer at the conclusion of the camp. “I know now I’m high on their board,” Otey said. “They are one of my top schools, [too]. It’s their history with defensive backs.” Otey, who is considered the 32nd-best cornerback and No. 357 prospect overall in the Class of 2019, recently narrowed down his list of nearly 20 scholarship offers to Arkansas, Florida State, Louisville, Michigan and Oklahoma. He plans to return to campus on June 22 and hopes to make a decision sometime next month. Ohio State’s cornerback recruiting has lagged a bit behind this cycle, but a big reason for that is because the Buckeyes have signed eight cornerbacks over the last two years. The need simply isn’t there, so the staff can be a bit more judicious in their search for one or two players at the position. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas four-star Jordan Battle, though listed by recruiting sites as a safety, is Ohio State’s top target this cycle. I anticipate they’ll land his commitment when he takes his official visit the weekend of June 22-24. But Otey and Tennessee four-star Woodi Washington, who also made the trip on Friday, certainly staked their claims as top-tier targets. Florida four-star Kaiir Elam, who wrapped up a two-day visit on Saturday, is also in that conversation. I get the sense that it's a two-team race between the Buckeyes and Sooners, with the staff putting itself in a great position for Otey. If they make a push, I think Ohio State could ultimately pull a prospect out of Blackman for the second-consecutive year.
Adonis Otey has Ohio State near the top following visit The Buckeyes hosted a trio of big-time athletes from Tennessee during their one-day camp on Friday, including Murfreesboro Blackman’s Adonis Otey. Blackman, if you recall, is the home of current Ohio State freshman tailback Master Teague III. Otey is a 3-star cornerback for the Blaze, and he has offers from 19 schools, listing Alabama, Florida State, Oklahoma and Ohio State among them. He’ll make his college decision Aug. 1 and told LR that the trip to Ohio made a big impression on him. “The best part was when we went and talked to coach [Urban] Meyer, he told us that we were high on their board,” Otey said. “I’ve been all over the place, but it’s just Ohio State – that’s what stands out – especially to me, because of their success with defensive backs.” Ohio State sees Otey, he said, as a player capable of lining up either at safety or at cornerback. He spent most of his visit working with new cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson and enjoyed the experience with him. “He is a great coach,” Otey said of Johnson. “I enjoyed my time with him. “He was kind of laid back because it was only three of us in that group, but we still got a good workout.” With a decision coming soon – and Ohio State already having two safeties committed – it will be interesting to watch how the Buckeyes value Otey. There is a sense that if they pushed for a commitment here, they could get it.
