    BEST OF THE REST?
With that, Ohio State will welcome Ocala, Florida, West Port three-star quarterback Brian Maurer to campus Friday Night Lights on June 22. He told Eleven Warriors this morning he’s “very” excited to make his first trip to Columbus.

Day has been keeping tabs on the 6-foot-4, 185-pound Maurer all spring, and stopped by his high school to watch him throw back in late April. He is considered just the 18th-best pro-style quarterback and No. 485 prospect overall in the Class of 2019, but has seen his stock soar following his performance at the Elite 11 Finals earlier this month.

Maurer, who punched his ticket to The Opening Finals that weekend, has since added offers from Syracuse and Texas A&M to his list that already included Boston College, Cincinnati, Indiana, Pittsburgh, UCF, USF and West Virginia. The Mountaineers are the favorite in his recruitment at this point in time, but that could certainly change with an offer from the Buckeyes next week.

“It would mean a ton,” Maurer said back in April. “A top-tier school like Ohio State would definitely shake some things up in my recruitment.”

Maurer has the size, arm strength and athleticism of a top-tier quarterback, as he threw for 2,862 yards and 22 touchdowns while rushing for 400 yards and six touchdowns for the Wolf Pack last season. I think he has a chance to become Ohio State’s top attainable target with a strong performance next weekend.

That said, Florida has also been kicking the tires on Maurer a bit recently, and he’s actually on an unofficial visit in Gainesville as we speak. I’m not convinced an offer from the Buckeyes would automatically end his recruitment, as the Gators would surely follow suit.

Breaking down Florida QB Brian Maurer
We’ve talked about quarterback targets quite a bit in the last two weeks and will no doubt discuss it even more in the coming weeks and months. But as the Buckeyes continue their search in the Class of 2019, it’s time to start closely looking at Ocala (Fla.) West Port 3-star prospect Brian Maurer.

First of all, with a solid performance at The Opening in Dallas in early July, I’d be shocked if Maurer didn’t get bumped to 4-star status by the recruiting network folks. He’s got the size, speed and arm strength to be a top-tier prospect. A good showing on a national stage should cement his positioning.

Before he heads to Texas for that key workout, Maurer will visit Ohio State this weekend. The trip could become very important for his recruiting and for the Buckeyes. If you take the 6-foot-4, 185-pound prospect at his word, Ohio State is close to offering — and that will shake up his recruitment.

“I really like Texas A&M, I like UCF, I like West Virginia [and] Ohio State’s going to offer me,” Maurer told John Patton and Ocala.com. “So Ohio State is going to be one of the top [considerations].”

The Buckeyes have seen Maurer throw in person with Ryan Day traveling to Florida in the spring. So, there’s no plan right now for a camp outing this week in Columbus. He did camp at Florida just over a week ago and reportedly ran a 4.51 in the 40-yard dash, despite the fact he’s still recovering from a broken foot that he hurt in spring football. If that 40 time is accurate, or even .2 or .3 seconds off, there’s no doubt he’s the type of quarterback that Ohio State would covet.

Will they pull the trigger on an offer this weekend? That’s the question. If they don’t, he could be moving away from Ohio State quickly.
