Former Notre Dame pledge hears from Buckeyes

Detroit Cass Tech 2018 cornerback Kalon Gervin decommitted from Notre Dame on Saturday.

The decision to reopen his recruitment moves the Irish back to 11 commitments and puts the country’s 21st-ranked cornerback on the market once more. The move wasn’t something that the Notre Dame staff was expecting, but for Gervin, he said it was just a matter of committing too early. Schools such as Oregon, Oklahoma and Michigan State have maintained serious pressure on the 5-foot-11, 180-pound defensive back.

He told Land of 10 on Saturday that he’s going to take a step back now and get himself to a few other schools. That list potentially could include Ohio State.

“I’ve got to see more schools,” he said. “Possibly Ohio State. I talked to [Buckeyes cornerbacks coach Kerry] Coombs on Saturday. He reached out to talk after I had decommitted.”

Coombs has a healthy relationship with Gervin, though the Ohio State staff has not yet offered. Whether that happens remains up in the air, but you should expect to see the energetic Buckeyes assistant on Michigan soil sometime soon.

“We didn’t talk much on Saturday, just real quick,” Gervin added. “He will be back to the school soon.”

Gervin talks to Urban
Land of 10 let you know on May 8 that Detroit Cass Tech cornerback Kalon Gervin had heard from the Buckeyes the day he de-committed from Notre Dame. The 4-star prospect, America’s 21st-ranked cornerback, has been recruited by Kerry Coombs for a while but Ohio State had not yet offered.

If you’re looking for a signal that could be changing, a phone call between Urban Meyer and Gervin on Monday may indicate such a possibility.

“I had a great talk with Urban Meyer on the phone today, I had never talked to him on the phone,” Gervin told Land of 10. “I’ve got to visit for an official offer. He said he was a big fan of mine and wants to get me down to spend some time with them.”

When that happens is now up to the 5-foot-11, 175-pound athlete. He believes it should be sometime soon.

“It’s going to be really soon,” he said of the visit. “I’m not far at all.”

PROTECTING THE FLAG UP NORTH

I also talked yesterday about Detroit Cass Tech four-star cornerback Kalon Gervin, as he'll attend the Ohio State's one-day position camp on June 17. He's not the only Michigander hoping to land an offer from the Buckeyes, though, as Saline cornerback Myles “M.J.” Griffin told Eleven Warriors he'll make his third trip to campus on the 9th.

“My mom told me she had a dream that I went to Ohio State,” Griffin said.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Griffin is not yet ranked by any major recruiting sites, but holds offers from Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Indiana, Iowa State, Miami (OH), Northern Illinois, Temple and Toledo after recording 15 tackles and five pass break ups during his sophomore season will Belleville. He transferred to Saline in December.

Griffin attended Ohio State's win over Tulsa last September, and has maintained constant contact with defensive backs coach Kerry Coombs ever since.

"[He] hasn't seen me in a while," Griffin said, noting how he's grown three inches since their last meeting.

LET'S TRY THIS AGAIN

Detroit Cass Tech four-star cornerback Kalon Gervin was supposed to attend Ohio State's one-day camp in mid-June, but was unable to make it for unspecified reasons. He told Eleven Warriors he'll return to campus for Friday Night Lights, though, hoping to land an offer from the Buckeyes.

“ can't wait,” Gervin said.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Gervin is considered the 21st-best cornerback and No. 200 prospect overall in the Class of 2018, as he recorded 23 tackles, 14 pass deflections and one interception to help the Technicians to the state championship last season. He committed to Notre Dame one week after the Fighting Irish offered him a scholarship in February, but reopened his recruitment in early May to explore his options.

Gervin recently released a Top 5 of Louisville, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Oregon and Virginia Tech, but an offer from Ohio State would undoubtedly change the course of his recruitment.

“[It would be] big time,” he said. “I've been talking to [assistant coordinator Kerry] Coombs and Urban for like a month now.”

Gervin has camped at Ohio State before, as he attended Friday Night Lights with a contingent of other Technicians last July. But this trip, which he'll make with his mother, should give him more time with Coombs — and a clear understanding of where he stands with the staff.

I anticipate an offer will be extended, and maybe even a chance to become a Buckeye, too.
