    STUDENT COMES BEFORE ATHLETE

Ohio State five-star offensive tackle signee Nicholas Petit-Frere may be finished with his illustrious high school career, but he’s still reeling in awards like the National Football Foundation Tampa Chapter Scholar Athlete of the Year.

The 6-foot-6, 272-pound Petit-Frere, you may recall, picked the Buckeyes on National Signing Day over finalists Alabama, Florida, Michigan and Notre Dame. His relationship with defensive coordinator and area recruiter Greg Schiano — whose sons attended Berkeley Prep when he was the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and who was assistant with the program after he was fired by the team — played a key role in the decision.

So did academics, so it’s no surprised Petit-Frere was honored on Thursday night. I wrote as much in his impact article earlier this month:

[Petit-Frere] was named to the headmaster's list every year of high school — sporting a 3.8 grade-point average — and student body class president as a senior. He was also inducted into the National Honor Society inductee; was named a U.S. Army National Scholar Athlete; and earned numerous awards for volunteerism, which includes time spent at local retirement homes, leading neighborhood food drives and painting low-income schools.

Petit-Frere remains undecided on his major, but has interest in fields like psychology, political science and engineering law — all of which Ohio State offers.

    OL Nicholas Petit-Frere
It’s unlikely he’ll start given the emergence of Thayer Munford at right tackle, but it would be a huge upset if Nicholas Petit-Frere doesn’t see the field for Ohio State this fall. While most first-year players on the offensive line redshirt at Ohio State, a number of elite offensive linemen in recent years have gotten backup snaps as freshmen. That list includes Jamarco Jones in 2014, Isaiah Prince in 2015, Michael Jordan in 2016 and Munford in 2017.

Petit-Frere, a 5-star tackle from Tampa (Fla.) Berkeley Prep, set off a huge celebration among Ohio State coaches when he committed in February.

“It was 50-year-old men acting silly and chest-bumping and jumping up-and-down and all that stuff,” Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said of the reaction to the commitment of the 6-foot-6, 272-pound player. “It was a very good feeling. He filled a need that every college in America has, and that’s an elite offensive tackle.

“Everybody in the country is looking for the tall, athletic, elongated guys that can bend, and they’re hard to find. That’s why they’re paid so well in the NFL, because those body types are hard, hard to find.”

    NICHOLAS PETIT-FRERE - OFFENSIVE TACKLE

Thayer Munford cemented his spot as the starting left tackle in spring drills but Nicholas Petit-Frere could challenge fourth-year junior Joshua Alabi as his primary backup.

Petit-Frere comes in as the No. 1 ranked player in Ohio State's 2018 class. He was the No. 7 overall prospect and top-ranked offensive tackle in the 247 rankings and a consensus top-15 prospect. He was a signing day commitment helping push Meyer's 2018 haul to the No. 2 spot nationally.

It might take a month or two for Petit-Frere to fully grasp all that comes with protecting the quarterback's blind side in big time college football but if can get enough practice reps against guys like Bosa and Young, he could be a key reserve in year one.

Reading that this kid moves like a wide receiver at 290 pounds. He’s raw, but has everything you can’t teach.

When he bends-squats down another foot he will be an O-line force.
