One of the many recruits scheduled to be visiting Ohio State this weekend is 2023 four-star quarterback Lincoln Kienholz (Pierre, SD / T.F. Riggs). The blue-chip QB has seen an uptick in contact from Ohio State as of late, and he will now be using one of his five official visits with the team.

While the visit is good news for the Buckeyes, the coaching staff has plenty of work ahead of themselves if he is to play football in Columbus. Kienholz committed to the Washington Huskies on June 29, 2022 after using an official visit the week prior.

Despite being committed to Washington, Kienholz is deciding to visit with Ohio State late in the season. This compounded with the news on Glenn’s de-commitment certainly looks promising for the Buckeyes, but as the team has learned the hard way, nothing is a guarantee in college football recruiting.

Glenn is the No. 22 QB in the 247Sports Composite and is the No. 378 overall prospect. He is also the No. 12 prospect out of Tennessee. Kienholz is the No. 24 QB in the 247Sports Composite Rankings and is the No. 404 prospect. He is also the No. 1 recruit out of South Dakota.

While Kienholz may be ranked lower in the above metrics, he is far from a falloff at the position. The blue-chip prospect had an incredible season that led to a South Dakota state title.

Ohio State will have another official visitor this weekend for its rivalry matchup with Michigan.

Four-star South Dakota quarterback Lincoln Kienholz will be among the many recruits in attendance for OSU’s rivalry matchup with Michigan, which may be the main reason the Buckeyes and 2023 four-star quarterback Brock Glenn split as the Tennessee signal caller flipped to Florida State Monday evening.

While Kienholz visiting is a huge indicator of his interest in OSU, the 6-foot-3, 185-pound signal-caller is currently committed to Washington, so the Buckeyes will have to flip him if they want to add him to their 2023 class. The interest in Kienholz isn’t a new development, as OSU quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis visited South Dakota to scout him in person earlier this fall during Ohio State’s off week. Should Glenn decommit, Kienholz would be the clear-cut No. 1 target to replace him.

This season, Kienholz helped lead Pierre High School (Pierre, South Dakota) to a state championship, completing 66.5 percent of his passes for 3,422 yards and 46 touchdowns to six interceptions. As a runner, Kienholz ran for 1,435 yards with 24 rushing touchdowns.

    LINCOLN KIENHOLZ
It may seem strange to rank the South Dakota signal-caller this high on the Heat Check because of both his position and that this is his first appearance on the board. But following the decommitment of Brock Glenn, the Buckeyes are left without a quarterback commitment in the 2023 class. And while they’re also without a running back (more on that later), the depth for the team could be in peril next season, considering Kyle McCord and Devin Brown would be the only scholarship quarterbacks on the roster (assuming C.J. Stroud enters the NFL draft) and whoever loses the quarterback battle could enter the transfer portal.

With that said, Kienholz is Ohio State's best chance at filling the need for depth from the prep rankings, as the four-star prospect made an official visit to Columbus last weekend and was seen as a priority visitor.

In the coming days, he’ll also likely receive in-home visits from Ohio State’s coaching staff. While the Buckeyes have a great chance to flip Kienholz, it’s not a certainty, as he remains close with Washington coach Kalen DeBoer, a South Dakota native.
