Rankin also included a mention on Cleveland Benedictine guard Cameron Wright, who rescinded his commitment to Ohio State last week after getting the drift from coach Thad Matta the past nine months that he was no longer wanted.

Wright, who probably will end up in the Mid-American Conference or at an Atlantic 10 school, was "very aggressive and did a good job attacking the rim in transition and slashing in the half-court," Rankin wrote. "He made his presence felt on the offensive glass and finished through contact."

Area athletes Wright, Pike learn hard lessons about the scholarship season

Benedictine's Cameron Wright is looking for a new college scholarship after withdrawing from an oral commitment to Ohio State.There once was a day when your word was your bond. Don't ask me when that day was, but I'm pretty sure it was before Twitter. Maybe I saw it in an old movie.
I am quite certain, however, that when it comes to college recruiting, the day is long gone.
Yet another local example played out recently when Benedictine junior basketball guard Cameron Wright reluctantly withdrew his oral commitment upon realizing Ohio State's interest in him had waned.
This is not a case of an immature player changing his mind after giving a nonbinding oral commitment, as so often happens. Wright gave his oral commitment to Ohio State before his sophomore season in October 2007. It seemed early at the time, but it hardly was unusual. Wright was the fourth sophomore who committed in 2007 to Ohio State and coach Thad Matta, who likes to lock up recruits early.
We don't really know the full story behind Wright's "decommitment" because by NCAA rule, Matta can't comment until binding letters of intent are signed. It appears the departure of OSU assistant John Groce, who took the head job at Ohio University, had a lot to do with it. Groce recruited Wright.
There's also speculation that either Wright hasn't developed into the player OSU had hoped, or the Buckeyes found someone they liked better, possibly Columbus Northland's J.D. Weatherspoon.

After his freshman year at Benedictine, Cameron Wright committed to play basketball at Ohio State.
That may have been too soon for Wright, and apparently too early for the Buckeyes. "They just sort of lost interest in me," said Wright, entering his senior year of high school. The 6-4 guard was the only Northeast Ohio product among the 80 players (only four from Ohio) at the King City Classic at the Wolstein Center this week. More than 100 college coaches watched, virtually all the big names such as North Carolina's Roy Williams, West Virginia's Bob Huggins, Florida's Billy Donovan and the Buckeyes' Thad Matta.
"My phone has been ringing from coaches who haven't called before," said Benedictine coach Rob Stircula, mentioning calls from Georgia Tech, Minnesota and Notre Dame. It's believed that Wright has received offers from Indiana and Wisconsin of the Big Ten. He mentioned Dayton, Notre Dame and Cleveland State also catching his interest. Most Mid-American Conference schools would love to sign him. "I am wide open right now," said Wright, who said that the Buckeyes' interest in him faded after assistant coach John Groce said goodbye to Columbus to become the head coach at Ohio.
