10 Things We Learned from Urbanâ€™s First Game

COLUMBUS â€” Itâ€™s hard to believe, but Urban Meyer first game at Ohio State is finally in the books.

It started slow, and was far from perfect, but the Buckeyes took Miami (Ohio) to the woodshed Saturday in a 59-10 victory at Ohio Stadium. Itâ€™s early and we still donâ€™t know how good the Redhawks will be this season, but we know quarterback Zac Dyster and Nick Harwell are legitimate pro prospects, just as Meyer said they were.

Hereâ€™s a look a the 10 Things We Learned from Meyerâ€™s first victory with the Buckeyes.

1. No such thing as a perfect offense. With all the changes happening at Ohio State this offseason, many Buckeye fans were expecting to turn on the game Saturday and see something they had never seen before. They were hoping to see an instantaneous explosion on offense with touchdowns every time the Buckeyes touched the football.

Only thatâ€™s not exactly how it happened, at least not right away. It took these players an entire quarter to really get a feel for the new offense and it took Meyer, along with Tom Herman, awhile to figure out exactly what Miami was doing to defend them.

Unlike his last couple jobs, everyone was well aware of what Meyerâ€™s offense can do, and there was plenty of tape out there for Miami coach Don Treadwell, formerly the offensive coordinator at Michigan State, to study in preparation for this game.

He only had 10 months to get ready. It showed in the opening quarter, as Miami defense actually managed to befuddle the OSU offense to the tune of just 43 yards. Many fans were baffled. Some started to crack jokes about wishing for the return of Jim Bollman (Ohio Stateâ€™s previous offensive coordinator).

RedHawk Miscues Allowed Buckeyes To Seize Momentum

The Miami RedHawks made no excuses following their loss to Ohio State on Saturday. They admitted freely they lost to a good football team that made big plays to defeat them.

Underlying that admission however was a twinge of "what if" that had to exist in the minds. For a quarter, the RedHawks didn't just play the Buckeyes even, they outplayed them completely, out gaining OSU by a whopping 172 yard to 48 in the first 15 minutes of the game.

Miami dominated on both sides of the ball, yet led just 3-0 on the scoreboard. The anemic scoring advantage despite the staggering statistical advantage was a function of a missed short field goal and and dropped passes in critical situations. In short, the RedHawks shot themselves in the foot (or would that be Talon) often enough to stymie themselves until the Buckeyes could gather themselves and seize the momentum. They finally did that when Devin Smith made a catch that was just short of impossible to give OSU a 7-3 lead. From that point on, it was all downhill for Miami.

"We played a great ball club today," said Miami Head Coach Donnie Treadwell.

"We had our hands full. We needed to play a game that in our mind would be our best. We had some opportunities to do that, especially early on. As you know this is a game of momentum. You could see the momentum move to them as they moved down the field."

Smith's catch ignites offense
After sluggish first quarter, tempo picked up and Miller found his groove

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The grand opening of the Urban Meyer era arrived right on schedule.

The unveiling of his offense was slightly delayed.

The new Ohio State coach didn't technically deliver instant results with the spread, no-huddle approach that was hyped for months. But what the first quarter may have lacked, the No. 18 Buckeyes more than made up for over the next three as the tempo got rolling and never slowed down in a 56-10 win over Miami (Ohio) on Saturday at Ohio Stadium.

"I was very disappointed in that first quarter," Meyer said. "I'm not sure we had 5 yards [passing]. There were lost-yardage plays, lack of production, overthrowing the ball here.

"That was not a great quarter, obviously."

After that, there wasn't much for the Buckeyes to complain about at all.

Braxton Miller started flashing his versatility, with the dual-threat quarterback piling up yardage on the ground and throwing for a pair of touchdowns through the air.

The up-tempo approach, combined with running back Carlos Hyde barreling through tacklers to wear down the RedHawks, built to the junior's 4-yard touchdown run that capped a 21-point outburst over just more than eight minutes in the second quarter.

And the search for a wide receiver capable of delivering a jolt of electricity ended quickly with Devin Smith leaping in the corner of the end zone for a one-handed snag that opened the scoring after that rough first 15 minutes. It signaled that everything was going to be just fine for the Buckeyes.

"That darned first quarter, I don't want to say I was embarrassed with the way we were playing," Meyer said. "We worked so hard, and we just didn't play very well in all phases.

"But that [Smith] catch, that was a 'wow' moment. That was a moment that ignited the stadium -- the stadium got quiet, the sideline got quiet, we were waiting for something to happen, and he went up and made a play. That's football."

Meyer's version of it eventually showed up, though the Buckeyes might have only scratched the surface of what they can do with his offense.

Miller set a school record for rushing by a quarterback in a single game, and his 161 yards came in less than three quarters before he left with cramps on a humid afternoon at the Horseshoe. He broke a record set in 1974 by Cornelius Greene.

There were a handful of opportunities deep down the field in which Smith or emerging wideouts Evan Spencer and Corey "Philly" Brown were open and ready to score, only to have the timing be just a bit off with the throw.

And even with Hyde wearing down defenders, Meyer still walked away disappointed he couldn't squeeze a bit more than 84 yards out of Hyde on 17 carries.

But if there's room for improvement, the Buckeyes weren't exactly hanging their heads after hanging half-a-hundred in their opener.

"We put up 56 points, and I mean, we probably played at 75 percent today," fullback Zach Boren said. "We didn't even come close to what we can really do, and I think that's the scary part."

There will, after all, still be encore performances for Meyer and his offense.

Millerâ€™s words, actions make Meyerâ€™s day

COLUMBUS â€” Urban Meyer had waited all his life for this moment.

He said he had begun following Ohio State when he was 3 Â½ or 4 years old. Growing up in Ashtabula, he had a framed picture of Woody Hayes hanging in his bedroom, alongside other Buckeye posters and memorabilia. In high school he wore No. 45 in honor of his all-time hero, Archie Griffin, the two-time Heisman Trophy winner who wore the same number for the Buckeyes.

As a young man, Meyer spent a year as a grad assistant coach on Earle Bruceâ€™s staff, and though the group was let go in 1987, he remained close to Bruce, who became like a second father.

And over the next 25 years, Meyer went on an ever-ascending coaching odyssey that took him around the nation and finally to Florida, where he spent six pressurized years and won two national crowns. But no matter how much Gator glory came his way, he was still a Buckeye at heart.

Some of that scarlet-and-gray embrace was glorified â€“ the old absence-makes-the-heart-grow-fonder deal â€“ but much of it was a true love of the history and traditions of OSU football, everything from the skull session and teamâ€™s pregame walk to the stadium to Script Ohio and â€œHang on Sloopyâ€ and singing â€œCarmen Ohioâ€ with the students afterward.

And this past week, as he finally readied for his first game as head coach of the Buckeyes, after a yearâ€™s hiatus from the game and the seemingly perfect replacement for the scandal-tainted Jim Tressel and then the beleaguered Luke Fickell and last yearâ€™s dismal 6-7 effort, Meyer admitted: â€œIâ€™ll be coming out of my shoes.â€

And Saturday, before the Bucks opened up against the Miami RedHawks at Ohio Stadium, he had told friends attending the game to be sure and take in the marching bandâ€™s â€œHang on Sloopyâ€ celebration before the start of the fourth quarter because he would be doing the same on the sideline.

After all this build-up, there he stood on the Buckeyes sideline in the first quarter and he felt that he was coming out of his shoes â€“ for all the wrong reasons.

During spring drills, as his new charges struggled to learn his fast-paced spread offense, Meyer had likened their efforts to €œa clown show.â€

A little bit...I was also surprised with the inconsistency of calls...Sabino had a beautiful hit over the middle and got flagged and Shazier had a similar play on the sideline with nothing.

at the lack of a pass rush on sat. but i think for the most part they only rushed 3,with Dysert a darn good passer they elected to keep people deep,will be different this sat vs UCF tittb::
