Alonzo Gaffney – ’19 PF Cleveland Garfield Heights: The Ohio State commit is already ranked as one of America’s top-25 prospects, so Gaffney didn’t need any additional exposure; however, the 6’9 forward showed considerable improvement since we last saw him, as Gaffney played like his shorts were on fire with great effort and passion on the defensive end. To make things even more impressive, Gaffney also shot the lights out from three, making 5 long-range shots in one game and 3 in another. As he continues to show that he can be consistently productive, Gaffney is in no danger of losing his ranking as Ohio’s top 2019 prospect.

    Alonzo Gaffney Has Dominant Weekend

Ohio State received its biggest commitment of the Holtmann era on April 10 when Gaffney announced his pledge to the Buckeyes, and the five-star 2019 prospect is staying active in the summer circuits.

Playing with the All-Ohio Red squad this summer, Gaffney suffered an 0-4 weekend April 20-22 in the Nike EYBL event. He made up for it, however, the following weekend, collecting a 3-1 record in Indianapolis.

According to a report from 247Sports, Gaffney combined to score 41 points and pull down 18 rebounds in his first two games of the weekend, both victories. He is shooting close to 50 percent from the 3-point line during the Nike EYBL circuit.

Gaffney Drops In Latest 247Sports 2019 Rankings
As is customary in the recruiting world, player rankings change over time, and 247Sports released their latest update on Thursday, which saw Ohio State's lone 2019 commit drop a few spots.

When Gaffney committed to Ohio State, he was rated as a five-star prospect and the No. 18 overall player in the 2019 class. On Thursday, however, 247Sports dropped Gaffney to a four-star prospect and the No. 29 overall player in his class.

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise, as players in both basketball and football tend to drop in the rankings once they have committed to a school. Of the top-30 players in the latest rankings, Gaffney is just one of four to have already committed to a school.

Jackson-Davis jumped three spots in the rankings from No. 23 to No. 20 after earning a pair of offers on Wednesday.

You can see the updated 247Sports player rankings for the 2019 class here.

The talent and upside with Alonzo Gafney is undeniable. There aren’t many with the length, fluidity, versatility and athleticism of the Ohio State bound forward. He does have to bring greater consistency to the floor but on Wednesday, it was all there. He was vocal on both ends, defended three positions, knocked down catch and shoot jumpers and finished with authority in the lane. Keita Bates-Diop is out the door this spring and while it will be a one year hiatus in Columbus from someone in his mold, Gaffney could be the ideal replacement a year from now as Chris Holtmann has a good one coming his way

Gaffney Drops Again In National Rankings
Ohio State's lone commit in the 2019 class, Alonzo Gaffney, has dropped in national recruiting rankings for the second time since pledging to Chris Holtmann's staff.

In mid-May, Gaffney dropped 11 overall spots in the 247Sports rankings and on Tuesday, Rivals dropped the Cleveland native nine spots overall and removed his fifth star from its rankings.

Gaffney was rated as the No. 21 overall player in the nation entering the week, but fell to No. 30 in the Rivals rankings on Tuesday. It is not unusual for committed players to drop in the rankings, as the intrigue is often lost in their recruitment. That does, however, bode well for Ohio State, as it likely means there is little to no chance of Gaffney flipping to another program.
