College football: Buckeyes still after top recruits for 2009

Ohio State already has 24 names in the bank for its 2009 football class, but action on the recruiting front has only gotten more intense. As the Buckeyes head into their last two days of pre-Fiesta Bowl practice before taking a break for Christmas, they still are in the running for at least four upper-echelon prospects. Chief among them are quarterback Tajh Boyd of Hampton, Va., and offensive lineman Marcus Hall of Cleveland.

The Buckeyes also are actively pursuing blue-chippers in defensive lineman Corey Adams of Scottsdale, Ariz., and receiver Marlon Brown of Memphis, Tenn.

But the Buckeyes need a top-rated lineman such as Hall, of Glenville High School. And with just two scholarship quarterbacks slated to return from this year's team -- freshman starter Terrelle Pryor and redshirt freshman Joe Bauserman -- they also need a

quarterback, especially one with the running/throwing talents of Boyd.

Boyd took an official visit to Oregon during the weekend, one week after doing the same at Ohio State.

Late yesterday afternoon, Marcus Hall was waiting his turn in a barbershop in Cleveland. This evening, he is expected to be in Knoxville, Tenn., taking a tour of the University of Tennessee during an official visit.

Such is the life for the offensive lineman from Cleveland Glenville, one of the few remaining top prospects who has yet to commit to a college. He's one reason why Ohio State, despite having 24 commitments for a class that's ranked No. 1 nationally by Scout.com, is still playing the waiting game.

"I plan on making my announcement sometime Monday," Hall said by phone from the noisy barbershop.

Ohio State, the University of Miami, Michigan and Tennessee are in the running, and he has tended to be taken by the last place he visited. But asked if he had a No. 1, he didn't hesitate.

"At this point, my favorite is Ohio State," Hall said.

The Buckeyes are also waiting on receiver Marlon Brown of Harding Academy in Memphis, Tenn. One of the top five receiver pro-spects nationally, he is considering Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Ohio State. He is not likely to name his choice until Wednesday, the first day that national letters of intent can be signed, but many analysts are predicting Tennessee.

Ohio State football: 2009 recruiting class passes first-look test

In many ways, recruiting is like the NFL draft for major-college football teams. A few who sign national letters of intent Wednesday might provide immediate help in 2009; most, however, will provide a stockpile for the future.

Going into this last weekend before signing day, Ohio State had commitments from 25 prospects for a class that at least one recruiting service, Scout.com, rates No. 1 in the country. It could be enhanced if elite players such as offensive lineman Marcus Hall of Cleveland Glenville and receiver Marlon Brown of Memphis, Tenn., pick OSU in the coming days.

But if the current list remains the status quo on signing day, how will this class help the Buckeyes in the short and long term? Let's take a look:

Quarterback

â€¢ Commitments: One (Kenny Guiton).

It's the only position where there was a true need, and a last-minute appeal to a Texan filled the slot. Guiton, a dual-threat QB from Aldine, Texas, didn't appear on OSU's radar until the middle of last week. The presence of Terrelle Pryor, who won the starting job as a freshman in 2008, scared off Tajh Boyd, Austin Boucher and others. But with only one other scholarship QB, Joe Bauserman, the Buckeyes needed at least one more for a quorum. Guiton jumped at the shot to understudy Pryor and then take his chances.

already have 2 verbals and don't be surprised if by the weekend at least 1 more will commit,Norwel or James both top 50 for 2010.

Ohio State football: Hall gives Buckeyes seven top 100 recruits

Glenville's Marcus Hall, who gave his oral commitment to Ohio State this afternoon, is the 26th member of Ohio State's recruiting class, which will become official on Wednesday's National Signing Day.

Hall is the seventh Ohio State pledge ranked among the top 100 players in the country by Scout.com, which puts Ohio State behind only USC's eight top 100 players.

OSU tops recruiting lists, but what does that mean?

The intense interest many fans have in college football recruiting has always been a mystery to me.

Casual interest makes sense; it's a way for devoted fans to keep their hobby going 365 days a year when the season is pretty much condensed into a four-month period. It makes you feel good to know that the "experts" think the quarterback Ohio State recruited is going to be better than the QB who has announced for Michigan, even if deep down you know that it may not be true. It's something to make small talk about at the office water cooler, in the sports bar or at cocktail parties. It's a pleasant way to get past the loss to Texas or USC.

What I don't understand are the people who devour this stuff, who get depressed when some defensive back from Florida who was reportedly leaning toward OSU is now leaning toward Florida State or get absolutely giddy when the second best prospect in the state of Pennsylvania announces he is going to be a Buckeye. (Lest we forget: Ohio State has landed players in the past who were ranked as the No. 1 or No.2 prospect in Ohio and they barely played.)

This seems like the hardest position for OSU to bring in top notch recruits on a normal basis.

Any big name DT's that OSU has begun working on or will begin soon that we can begin :drool: over?

Um, Johnny Simon?

Garrett Goebel was a top 100 player on some recruiting sites for 2008.

Right, but Johnny Simon was a 5* in one place and ranked as like the 40th ranked guy on Rivals. I feel like we have trouble there over other places

Simon started in the All-American game, which means he was better than other All-Americans who showed up for the game.

Either way, don't get too caught up in recruiting rankings.

Indeed, we've brought in some highly rated DTs the last two years and it's always good to keep the ranks stocked with top end talent. For 2010, top DTs are out of state as is normal and there are a few according to the major recruiting websites. Beau Allen (MN), Calvin Barnett (OK), Frank Boenzi (IL), Terrance Bourne (DE), Ray Guy (TX) (Same team as our most recent QB pursuit, Kenny Guiton). Sharrif Floyd (PA) is a guy that did very well at the most recent junior combine, and he looks pretty beastly.
