I thought this might be a fun topic of discussion... the chance to lament on the talented, or not so talented, young men that for reasons on or off the field, and failed to pan out.

Some of the more notable ones in my mind, in no particular order:

Andy Katzenmoyer... Beast on the field, kitten in the classroom. Couldn't even maintain his GPA even with taking Golf as an elective. >_<

Noah Spence. Another young man that got bit by the party bug. It's so disappointing seeing someone with that much talent and potential throw away their scholie by partying. I am glad he got his life back on track and got a chance at the NFL though.

Duron Carter... I can't even with this young buck. First prove you're as good as your old man, then you can flex that much ego. Second, boy, you need to open up a Webster's and memorize the meaning of the words commitment, humility, and determination. Lazy coattail riding sonuva...

Rod Smith... a guy that had the size and speed to be another Eddie George, but never fully made the step up to realize his potential. Some of it was trouble with injuries, most of it just being outworked by the law firm of Hyde, Hall, Herron, and Saine.

Mike Mitchell... Hated to see him leave the team, but I get the transfer with his dad's health issues. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, he dropped off TT's roster and hasn't played ball since. One of the ones where everyone will always wonder what may have been, but it's just a game and his family rightfully came first. It shows he has good folks that raised a good man.

Storm Klein... Another case of a player just not making that step up, but in Klein's case I think it was mostly lack of effort, a little lacking in talent, and a small part coaching. Can't pin too much blame on coaching, though, given the other Linebackers we had in that span.

JB Shugharts... AKA Capt False Start... To be fair he wasn't necessarily a bad lineman, if you discount being guaranteed at least 1 false start per game. Then again... When teams with such perpetual OLine woes as the Browns, Bills, Lions, Buccaneers, and Jets all pass on giving you a roster spot... well... maybe they're onto something...

    Nice topic.

Recent memory for me is Dontre Wilson. He was the first speedy guy Urban recruited and we all thought he was going to be a lot more productive on the field.

I almost put him on my list. Had much higher expectations of him.

Two other guys I thought would be much better than they were, both linebackers...

    Etienne Sabino
    Curtis Grant

I know Grant started MLB on the National Championship team, but when you’re compared to Ray Lewis coming out of HS, the expectations get high.

Yeah Grant was very much helped out by how good the rest of the D around him was. If he didn't have all that support he'd have been exposed for sure.

I’ll add Marcus Baugh to this list too. Go back and read the first few pages of his thread, hilarious!! There was even a Kellen Winslow Jr comparison.

    Starters aren’t busts, IMO.

That’s why I didn’t list Curtis Grant, Marcus Baugh, Dontre Wilson, etc

Lamaar Thomas was supposed to be Dontre Wilson, and completely fell off the map. Same with Jamaal Berry.

The only bust I have listed who started for a bit was Sabino, but he honestly just filled a gap in the depth chart bc of attrition at the MLB spot. He was easily our worst MLB in the past decade.

    Trevon Grimes?

He’s not a bust because of his talent or anything.... just disappointing that we never saw him play for more than a few snaps.

I thought he was gonna be a star here.

    ahh yeah, that’s right.

Again, not a bust. He transferred out for family issues after a year.

I give Zwick a pass because Troy kinda took it from him. He might have actually been good, he just wasn’t on the level of Troy.

When you come in as highly ranked as Zwick and never start a snap outside of cleanup duty when the starter is out, that's a bust.
