"On defense, we’ll be aggressive, with multiple fronts, sound and simple for the players so that they will have the ability to play fast."
    -Ryan Day

I'll take that as a hint that Schiano won't be around in '19

Schiano’s name being thrown around again for the Temple job as Manny Diaz has accepted the job at Miami...

If Schiano does leave, who would y’all want to replace him? I keep hearing that Alex Grinch is a Star in the making. I also read that the poor play of the Safeties and Linebackers could be attributed to Schiano’s complex scheme that forces players to think far too much on the field. Who knows.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing any of the following on the staff.

DJ Durkin - who knows what Saban has in store Durkin. But if Tosh Lapoi doesn’t go anywhere, Durkin won’t be the DC there

Marcus Freeman - former Buckeye player, has done some really good stuff with Luke Fickell at Cinci. I’d like to see him with a little more experience, but this could be the right move at the right time

Mike Tressel - let’s be honest, the name Tressel on the sidelines again would be awesome! I think he’s a great LB coach and seems to be a pretty darn good DC as MSU had the #14 total defense this year. I’m just not sure if he’s too loyal to Dantonio to take the same position at a different school in the division, even though it’s probably a dream job scenario

    Tressel
    Freeman
    Durkin

Grinch gets the first shot. But maybe you could convince Freeman to come and be DC in waiting. Grinch shines, he's hear another 2 years at most

If you’re watching MSU absolutely dominate Oregon right now on defense, it’s easy to want Tressel. They have held Oregon to <100 total yards halfway thru the 3rd quarter.

I really was hoping Tressel was the guy before Greg was hired.

Look at what the previous mentioned coaches have done with less talent. Time for Schiano to go...and take Davis.

My gut tells me he is back next year...……

His name is not getting any momentum regarding any coaching vacancies...……

    The situation is fluid...…….

Really, Greg fucking Mattison. There's a reason he was demoted from DC. That's they best you could do. I am not thrilled about this hire Day. This is a bad one

I'm all for moving on from Schiano--- but Mattison? A septuagenarian Harbaugh tag-along that's been at Michigan for almost a decade, another DL specialist, who was making $750k as a position coach last year?

Way to kill my high from Schiano leaving

In all fairness to Day and Mattison, we don't know his role. If he was brought to Ohio State to be the sole DC, yes, I'm not happy, either. However, I have a feeling that Day will bring is some young talent with the idea of learning from LJ and Mattison.

I have very mixed feelings about this one. Let's home the next three hires are younger studs! Washington, Freeman, Raymond, Busch, Buckley, etc...

He's older than LJ by 6 years*, has coached the same unit for most of his career, makes the same as LJ, and is objectively not as good as LJ. There is no role for Mattison that I'm happy with. This is either a waste of a position and money by overlapping expertise, or Mattison is going to run the show on defense. Both of witch are puzzling to me

    *Edit, bad math: 3 years

I think it has more to do with grooming a younger cat.

Who is that Hafley cat. I fee like either Day was turned down and these. Are 2nd, 3rd, and 4th options or Day laid an absolute egg on defensive hirings so far.

Mattison will groom his replacement and I think all of you are being to hard on the guy...……..he will not be coaching at Michigan going forward under Harbaugh...…..that alone will help...….I am happy about the hire but I guess I am in the minority...…….he is a great coach and recruiter...……..not sure why the angst over him……..Consistently churned out top defenses...…..He is a fundamentals first coach...…….

Nope. Not done on the defensive side either.
