We are right on the heels of summer and when it finally hits, action on the recruiting trail is in full effect. With thousands of camps across the country, prospects will be looking to make a name for themselves and catch the interest of Ohio State. While the 2017 class is loaded, there aren't a whole lot of spots left. Any offer that goes out for 2017 is a take. The Buckeyes can't afford to take any projections this year.

As for 2018, it should be more of the same. The amount of top tier prospects that hold the Buckeyes in high regard is staggering. Ohio State should finish with a top five class in this recruiting cycle as well as 2018.

Speaking of the 2018 class, Ohio State sent a new offer out to 2018 tight end Jeremy Ruckert (Lindenhurst, NJ. / Lindenhurst Senior) on Tuesday. Ruckert has just seen his recruitment take off over the last month, but its taken off in a big way.

In addition to now holding an offer from the Buckeyes, Ruckert also has gathered offers from Alabama, Penn State , Wisconsin and Florida State. The recruiting sites do not have him officially rated, but it's looking like Ruckert will be one of the top tight ends in his class.

At 6 feet 5 inches and 220 pounds, Ruckert is an instant mismatch in the passing game – and there's still a chance he continues to grow. Ruckert is a good pass catcher and also provides running ability after the catch. Ohio State has made the east coast a priority over the last couple of years and all that hard work has a good chance to pay off in this recruitment. Ohio State has been successful in sending tight ends to the NFL the past two seasons, as seen in Jeff Heuerman and Nick Vannett, and there's no doubt that could be a factor as well. Watch for the Buckeyes to try and get him on campus as soon as possible.

NEW 2018 OFFER EXCITED TO TALK TO URBAN MEYER

While it's uncertain if the Buckeyes will take a tight end in 2017, it's a virtual certainty they will in 2018, and today they offered a new one in that class.

Jeremy Ruckert, a 6-foot-5, 220-pounder from Lindenhurst, New York got his offer directly from Urban Meyer.

"I spoke to (Urban) Meyer," Ruckert said of his offer. "It was over the phone. It was a very humbling and very cool experience and an honor for it to be from him."

Alabama has offered. Florida State offered today. Ruckert is just getting started with all his college attention, but an offer from Ohio State is special and he's only heard from the Buckeyes for one day.

"Yesterday, I spoke with their recruiting coordinator and then I was told to call back this morning and talk with (Urban) Meyer," he said. "He ended (the phone call) with an offer. It was a very good conversation. It's Ohio State, and that's just so cool to begin with, but every year they're one of the top, if not the top team in college football. I know they do a great job with their tight ends and send a bunch of players to the draft which is appealing."

No decision is coming anytime soon but Ruckert is eager to start getting into his recruitment.

"I'm going to a bunch of camps this summer," Ruckert said. "I'm definitely thinking about visiting Ohio State. I'm gonna ride out this process as long as possible."

Ruckert prepares for wild two weeks

One of the tight ends that Ohio State has offered in the 2018 class will embark on a fairly large tour of the United States starting next Sunday. Lindenhurst (N.Y.) 4-star Jeremy Ruckert will visit eight schools in eight days, culminating in a two-day Big Ten stop.

The visit to Ohio State will be the first for Ruckert, who says he’s looking forward to coming to Columbus.

“I can’t wait to get to Ohio State, I’m looking forward to checking it out with my family.”

While he knows he’ll visit the Buckeyes, Ruckert isn’t sure yet if he’ll work out in Columbus. He gave Ed Warinner and Urban Meyer a chance to see him work out in New Jersey during a satellite camp in early June.

“I’m not sure I’ve I’m going to workout, I already worked out for them at the Tri-State showcase,” Ruckert said. “All the coaches are very excited to show me around. I’m looking forward to checking out the facilities and the campus. “They say they want me to leave with Ohio State on top of my list. I’m excited to check it out.”

    ADDING TO THE NOISE

It's sometimes hard to put much stock in prospects from outside the current recruiting cycle trimming their list of prospective colleges considering the possibility that they field offers down the road.

For example, four-star tight end Jeremy Ruckert of Lindenhurst, New York, named Ohio State one of 13 finalists earlier this month — despite the fact National Signing Day 2018 is more than a year and a half away — and then expanded his list to 14 when UCLA offered on Wednesday.

The Bruins now join Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Penn State, Rutgers, Tennessee and Wisconsin in the race for the second-ranked player in the state of New York and No. 6 tight end in the Class of 2018.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pounder, you may recall, made a trip to Friday Night Lights last month during an eight-day voyage that included stops in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Tallahassee, Florida; Athens, Georgia; Knoxville, Tennessee; and Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Ruckert is expected to make another unofficial visit this fall when Ohio State hosts Michigan.

    BIG TEN BATTLE

Expect Ohio State to make the cut for Lindenhurst, New York, four-star tight end Jeremy Ruckert when he narrows down his Top 14 to five later this week.

The 6-foot-6, 225-pound Ruckert is considered the third-best tight end in the Class of 2018 and the Buckeyes' top priority at the position. He was on campus for Friday Night Lights over the summer and again for the season finale against Michigan.

“I had an amazing time,” Ruckert told Eleven Warriors after the game.

Ruckert holds nearly 30 scholarship offers, but Michigan and Penn State will likely be the most viable threat to Ohio State.
