    DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer was an outspoken opponent of an early signing period, but has somewhat lightened his stance on the matter in the last week after the Collegiate Commissioners Association approved 72-hour window in mid-December.

His main issue rested with the proposed June or August signing periods — as he claimed it would force programs to significantly alter their recruiting schedule — but the December date seems to have accelerated things, as well.

I say that solely because the Buckeyes recently watched a practice and then offered a scholarship on Wednesday night to Scottsdale, Arizona, Chaparral freshman quarterback Jack Miller.

The 6-foot-3, 197-pound Miller is not yet ranked by major recruiting sites, but will undoubtedly be one of the most sought-after prospects in the Class of 2020 after throwing for 3,653 yards and 53 touchdowns in his first year as a starter for Scottsdale Christian last season.

Miller, who transferred schools in January, already holds offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Florida State, Louisiana Tech and Memphis.

Of course, the first thing that popped into everyone's mind when Miller announced the scholarship offer on Twitter was former Ohio State commit and current Kentucky quarterback Danny Clark. The similarities end at the word freshman, though, as Clark was an in-state prospect from Akron Archbishop Hoban and the staff knew he would commit on the spot as soon as he got an offer.

There's a long way to go in Miller's recruitment, and the staff is certainly in no hurry to add a freshman quarterback into the fold after seeing how Clark's play declined and his recruitment ultimately unfolded. The focus will instead be on signal callers from the Class of 2019, with Texas four-star Grant Tisdale leading the way.

    Jack Miller, Scottsdale, Ariz.

In recruiting, it’s always a good thing to be a step ahead when it comes to the “next big thing,” and Ohio State make that step when if offered this budding star in May.

Miller, a 6-foot-3, 197-pound sophomore, threw for an incredible 53 touchdowns and more than 3,600 yards as a freshman at Scottsdale Christian last season. This year, he’s making a big jump in competition with a transfer to Chaparral High School, and this summer’s camp circuit should be a good launching point for three years of insane recruiting attention.

Day visited Scottsdale in May and saw Miller throw in person, which prompted the Ohio State offer. Now, Meyer will get a chance to see what the talented Class of 2020 member can do. Miller has eight offers already, including from Florida State, Ole Miss, Arizona, Arizona State, North Carolina and Texas A&M. Some family ties to Ole Miss could have the Rebels as the favorite right now, but a trip to Columbus to meet with Meyer is certainly a trip made for business, not pleasure.

    Buckeyes, Jack Miller growing relationship

One of the country’s top 2020 quarterback prospects did not disappoint during a recent camp performance at Ohio State. I told you on Saturday that Scottsdale (Ariz.) standout Jack Miller was the best quarterback in attendance on Friday in Columbus.

“I would take him right now,” a college coach in attendance told me. “He’s the real deal.”

Miller’s take on Ohio State was similarly excellent.

“It was really good,” he said of the visit and the camp. “I loved everything about it. [Ryan] Day told me that whenever you throw a football, it should matter. Never throw just to throw. He told me to stay hungry, and that was the biggest takeaway for me.”

As a soon-to-be-sophomore, Miller’s options are growing every day. Right now, Ohio State, Florida State and Ole Miss are among the top group. His father, also named Jack, told Land of 10 that he and his family are taking this process very seriously.

“Jack is handling [recruiting] very well,” the elder Miller shared. “We don’t intend to let the pressures of this decision take the place of having fun growing up and being a kid.

“Right now, we are looking hard at potential places for Jack to play and coaches to play for. He is young, so academics will be something we look at the end next year as he perhaps has a better feel for his career desires outside of football.”

There’s a long way to go here, and a lot of conversations to be had, but the Buckeyes certainly are in a good spot with Miller and are fortunate to have him on campus already. His father told Land of 10 that there were dozens of schools trying to get him to visit this summer, but that Ohio State was one of just three trips they’ll make outside of Arizona.
