    PLANNING AHEAD

With starting running back Mike Weber eligible to enter the NFL Draft next year and not a whole lot of depth behind him, Ohio State has made the position a priority for the Class of 2018. The Buckeyes already hold commitments from four-stars Jaelen Gill and Brian Snead and are actively looking to add at least one more to the fold.

Of course, the recruiting train keeps chugging, and it's never too early to look for the next great ball carrier. That's why the staff has now offered four of the top five running backs from the Class of 2019, the latest being Katy, Texas, four-star Deondrick Glass.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Glass is considered the fifth-best running back and No. 67 prospect overall in his class, having rushed for 1,912 yards and a whopping 30 touchdowns to lead the Tigers to the third round of the state playoffs. He holds double-digit offers from programs such as Florida State, Michigan, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Washington.

“They're all big and great schools, but one of my favorite college running backs went to Ohio State [Ezekiel Elliott],” Glass told Eleven Warriors. “They're all really good schools. I'm grateful that they're even looking at me.”

Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford delivered the news late Saturday night, obviously seeing the similarities on tape between Elliott and Glass.

"We're just starting to get to know each other, but I'm definitely looking to build a better relationship with him,” Glass said.

Ohio State offers 2019 tailback from Texas

Last November we introduced readers to Katy (Texas) 2019 running back Deondrick Glass. On Saturday night, Ohio State effectively introduced itself to him.

It’s an offer that means a lot to the 5-11, 190-pound tailback.

“It surprised me,” Glass told Land of 10. “I was definitely not expecting it. They like the way that I run, the way I read my blocks.”

Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford had good luck in Texas in the 2017 recruiting class, landing J.K. Dobbins out of the Lone Star State. Now he’ll work to get to know Glass.

“I’ve not talked to him much,” Glass said of Alford. “I’m looking to build more of a relationship with him. I really can’t explain what [the Buckeyes offer] means. It really means a lot.”

The first step to getting that relationship where it needs to be? Ohio State will have to get the No. 5-ranked running back on campus. He’s got family in the Midwest (Chicago) and says he may be able to make a visit sometime this year.

“I’ve been to Texas, Texas A&M and LSU lately,” he said. “I may be going to visit Ohio State this summer.”

Texas running back Deondrick Glass staying in touch with Buckeyes

No team has recruited Texas native Noah Cain, the country’s No. 1-ranked running back in the Class of 2019 per the 247Sports composite, harder than the Buckeyes. But Ohio State hasn’t expended all of its energy on Cain. Katy (Texas) 4-star prospect Deondrick Glass says he’s hearing from the Buckeyes a lot. We first talked about him last November.

“I’m talking to Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M the most,” Glass told Land of 10 on Thursday. “Penn State, Georgia, Colorado, and Notre Dame have been [recruiting me] hard also.”

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Glass suffered a torn ACL a year ago, but is back and playing this season. And the No. 5 running back in the 2019 class says no one has slowed down their recruiting efforts due to the injury. At Ohio State, it’s Meyer and staff member — and former assistant coach — Tim Hinton whom he talks with the most.

“They’re talking to me about a coming to visit,” he said. “Urban Meyer is real cool to talk to. They want me to come visit soon, I’m waiting on my dad to book the tickets. It would have been this weekend but the hurricane threw everything off.

“I’ve got to look at my schedule to see when I can go because my school is very demanding and my teammates and I are chasing a 6A championship.”

4-star RB Deondrick Glass emerges as an Ohio State target

Running back will be one of Ohio State’s most widespread searches for talent in the country in the 2019 class, as evidenced by the more than a dozen offers out at the position. The Buckeyes have offered running backs in eight states, including Katy (Texas) product Deondrick Glass. Glass, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound player, is ranked as a 4-star prospect, the No. 14 running back in the country, and the No. 193 prospect overall in 2019 on the 247Sports composite rankings.

While Glass has not been publicized much as a realistic target for Ohio State, the Buckeyes seem to be clearly in the mix for his services. Glass’ offer list is long and includes powerhouse programs such as Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas, Florida State, Michigan, Florida, Tennessee and several other Power 5 programs. Glass holds nearly two dozen offers and has been in touch with some standout programs to set up visits.

“I’ve been in contact with coach Tony Alford quite a bit right now. Me and my dad are working on getting information together and coming up there for a visit in either April or May,” Glass told Land of 10. “We will be visiting Alabama, Georgia and Oklahoma soon also.”

Glass has not yet been to Ohio State and his planned spring visit will be his first time seeing the Columbus Ohio campus. Still, his relationship with running backs coach Alford and Ohio State’s recent track records with Texas prospects, including breakout first-year running back J.K. Dobbins, has Ohio State very much in the mix for Glass.

“I like their colors and their tradition. I really like Coach Alford and that they play their freshmen. I also like that they’re always contenders and always have a winning season,” Glass said.

Glass was dominant in his junior season, rushing for 1,690 yards and 26 touchdowns during the fall. He averaged more than 7.8 yards per carry. The 247Sports composite rankings lists Glass as the No. 25 prospect in talent-rich Texas.

ADD HIM AND CALL IT A DAY
Staying in the Lone Star State, Katy four-star running back Deondrick Glass included Ohio State in his Top 10 on Friday afternoon alongside Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M, TCU and USC.

“I’ve been a Buckeye fan since I was like 10 [years old],” Glass told Eleven Warriors. “[They schools has] great tradition and seems like a great place to earn a degree.”

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Glass is considered the 17th-best running back and No. 224 prospect overall in the Class of 2019, as he rushed for 1,690 yards and 26 touchdowns to lead the Tigers to the state semifinals — where they lost a cold, rain-soaked contest to Ohio State quarterback Matthew Baldwin and five-star wide receiver commit Garrett Wilson — last season.

Glass has never been to campus, but has been eyeing a trip to Columbus for quite some time.

“I can’t wait to to take my official visit soon,” Glass said. “I’m thinking [it’ll be] in the fall so I can see what the campus and football atmosphere is like during that time. Looking forward to seeing everyone and everything.”

The Buckeyes already hold commitments from a pair of running backs in Georgia four-star Steele Chambers and Indiana four-star Sampson James, but there’s possibly room for one more if its the right fit — or the former decides he wants to play linebacker at the next level instead.

With that said, running backs coach Tony Alford has kept close tabs on Glass and Florida four-stars Noah Cain and Kenny McIntosh, and the Buckeyes should remain in the running in their respective recruitments until the very end as a result.

Deondrick Glass will visit Ohio State
On Monday, we spoke a bit about IMG Academy 2019 running back Noah Cain, his upcoming visit to Ohio State and where things stand with him right now. Today, we’ll head to Texas and catch up with another of the running backs who could potentially replace recent decommitment Sampson James.

There have been a number of instances in which we’ve evoked the name Deondrick Glass, but because the Buckeyes seemed set at tailback in 2019, the efforts to recruit him or any other running back were lukewarm at best. Glass is a 4-star prospect at Katy (Texas) High School and the country’s No. 14-ranked running back. His offer list shows more than 25 teams, including Ohio State, Alabama and Georgia — but it’s Oklahoma State that holds 100-percent of the current 247Sports.com crystal ball predictions.

Some people believe that’s because the Cowboys are among the only programs that would currently accept a commitment from Glass. He’ll take an official visit to Stillwater during the last weekend of October and has a trip scheduled to Alabama for an official visit in early November.

And at some point, he’ll take an official visit to Ohio State. On Monday night, Bill Kurelic of 247Sports reported that would be for the Nebraska game on Nov. 3, but Glass told Lettermen Row that’s still kind of up in the air.

“I’m kind of waiting on my dad to confirm,” Glass said Monday night. “I will be visiting next month though, either Nov. 3 or Nov. 24.”

The Buckeyes, likely, would prefer the Nov. 3 date so his visit didn’t run alongside Cain’s.

Glass has really not done much with respect to recruiting yet. There have been no official visits, and he’s not taken many unofficial trips anywhere, either. He has never denied being a fan of Ohio State, though, a program that caught his attention years ago thanks to his affinity for Ezekiel Elliott.

“I like Ohio State, they’ve been one of my favorite schools,” he said. “I haven’t had much time to focus on recruiting. I’ve been thinking about this season and trying to bring Katy another championship.”
