Staying in Texas and the 2019 class…

Thanks to the work of Chris Ash, Kerry Coombs and Greg Schiano, there may be no position group in the country with a better recruiting reputation than the Ohio State secondary. The Buckeyes are fighting hard to land the country’s No. 2-ranked cornerback in the Class of 2018 (Texas’ Anthony Cook) after they landed the top two cornerbacks in the Class of 2017: Jeffrey Okudah and Shaun Wade.

On Monday, the Buckeyes offered another of the top young defensive backs in Texas — Richmond’s Erick Young.

A 6-foot-1, 195-pound cornerback at Bush High School, Young has six offers, including Florida State on Tuesday. TCU, Iowa State, Colorado, and Baylor also made an offer.

The No. 22-ranked cornerback in the country, Young is a speed-burner, running the 100-meter dash in 11.1 seconds. He returned each of his 2 interceptions in 2016 for scores.

    AHEAD OF THE CURVE

The battle between Ohio State and Texas will undoubtedly rage on beyond this year, too, as the Buckeyes offered Richmond Bush four-star cornerback Erick Young, one of the Lone Star State's top underclassmen, on Monday night.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Young is considered the 22nd-best cornerback and No. 263 prospect overall in the Class of 2019, but caught the attention of several of the country's top programs following his performance at Mike Vick's V7 Playmakers Showcase in Houston in July. In addition to offers from Baylor, Colorado and Iowa State, he's landed offers from Florida State and TCU in the month since.

"Young also took his turn on offense and looked as natural at receiver as he does in his projected cornerback role," Rivals recruiting analyst Nick Krueger said of Young after the event. "For a 2019 prospect, he’s just so naturally gifted athletically and can win reps on either side of the ball with physical talent alone. Young showed his value the as a defensive back earlier in the month at the state 7-on-7 tournament, and showed how capable he is as an overall player last weekend."

    LONE STAR STATE OF MIND
Though Ohio State — just one year removed from signing three of Texas' top six recruits — was unable to make another big splash in the Lone Star State last recruiting cycle, the Buckeyes haven't given up on recruiting the state's top prospects just because of the re-emergence of the Longhorns under head coach Tom Herman.

As a matter of fact, the two programs will continue to go head-to-head for players like Richmond Fort Bend Bush four-star cornerback Erick Young, who included Ohio State and Texas in his Top 10 on Tuesday afternoon alongside Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas A&M and USC.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Young is considered the 13th-best cornerback and No. 154 prospect overall in the Class of 2019, as he was named first-team all-district after he recorded 10 tackles and one interception for the Broncos last season — better put, teams simply avoided his side of the field. He has not been to campus since the Buckeyes offered last August.

Top Texas defensive back includes Ohio State in top 6

One of the country’s best defensive backs hails from Richmond, Texas, a southwest suburb of Houston. Erick Young, a 6-1, 195-pound cornerback in the 2019 recruiting class, is regarded by the 247Sports composite rankings as the No. 9 corner nationally, the No. 100 prospect overall and the No. 13 recruit in Texas.

Young holds nearly 30 offers, but he narrowed his list of schools to a top 6 on Monday. Ohio State made the cut alongside Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, USC and TCU. LSU and Texas were somewhat surprising omissions, but it’s still noteworthy for the Buckeyes to make the cut without yet hosting Young on campus for an unofficial visit.

The Buckeyes offered the impressive cornerback in August, the start of his junior season. It was an offer that Young coveted, and his childhood interest in the program has kept his interest in Ohio State alive.

“Ohio State is a school I’ve loved since I was a young boy,” Young told Land of 10 after dropping his top 6. “I like the defensive backs that come out of Ohio.”

Ohio State almost certainly will have to get Young on campus in the near future to become a realistic contender, but making his top schools list is a good start.

    DON’T EXPECT ANY FIREWORKS
Richmond Fort Bend Bush four-star cornerback announced on Wednesday evening he’ll make his college decision among finalists Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, TCU and USC on Independence Day.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Young is considered the 12th-best cornerback and No. 102 prospect overall in the Class of 2019, as he was named first-team all-district after he recorded just 10 tackles and one interception for the Broncos last season. He has not been to campus since wide receivers coach Zach Smith offered him a scholarship last August nor does he have a visit set up in the next month — effectively putting the Buckeyes’ chances somewhere between slim and none.

The Aggies, meanwhile, are the overwhelming favorite to land Young’s pledge.
