SMOKY MOUNTAIN PIPELINE Ohio State recently welcomed Thompson’s Station, Tennessee, Independence four-star wide receiver T.J. Sheffield to campus for an unofficial visit. “It was a great trip up to Columbus,” Sheffield told Eleven Warriors. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Sheffield is considered the 38th-best wide receiver and No. 229 prospect overall in the Class of 2019, as he’s hauled in 107 catches for 1,746 and 24 touchdowns in his three-year varsity career with the Eagles. He holds more than a dozen offers from programs such as Georgia Tech, Kentucky, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State, Stanford, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech. While on campus, Sheffield toured the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and watched practice. He also hung out with assistant wide receivers coach Keenan Bailey and running backs coach/area recruiter Tony Alford, who offered him a scholarship back in February. “They were nice,” Sheffield said. “[The facility had] a lot of history and reminders of their rivalry game.” Ohio State has made quite a push in Tennessee behind Alford, who was instrumental in the Buckeyes landing commitments last cycle from Franklin four-star offensive tackle Max Wray and Murfreesboro Blackman four-star running back Master Teague III. The Buckeyes also have offers out right now to some of the Volunteer State’s top prospects, including Sheffield’s teammate, four-star wide receiver Kendrell Scurry; Blackman four-star wide receiver Trey Knox and four-star cornerback Adonis Otey; Oakland four-star cornerback Woodi Washington; Siegel four-star defensive end Joseph Anderson; Nashville Franklin Roads four-star wide receiver Lance Wilhoite; and Nashville Davidson Academy four-star defensive end Ani Izuchukwu.

TAKE THE FIELD As the Spring Evaluation Period comes to a close at the end of the month, look for an increase in prospects trimming their list of scholarship offers in the coming weeks. Thompson’s Station, Tennessee, Independence four-star wide receiver T.J. Sheffield didn't want to wait until the turn of the calendar, though, and included Ohio State in his Top 4 on Friday morning alongside Arkansas, Notre Dame and Purdue. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Sheffield is considered the 37th-best wide receiver and No. 233 prospect overall in the Class of 2019, as he hauled in 56 catches for 840 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Eagles to the second round of the state playoffs last fall. He also added 119 yard and a score on the ground. Sheffield made his first and only trip to Columbus for a spring practice in late March. He spent time that afternoon with running backs coach/area recruiter Tony Alford and assistant wide receivers coach Keenan Bailey, who preached about the Buckeyes’ Real Life Wednesdays program. “It was a great trip,” Sheffield told Eleven Warriors. “[The facility had] a lot of history and reminders of their rivalry game.” Alford also dropped by Sheffield's school earlier this month to watch him practice. Ohio State could see heavy turnover at the wide receiver position following the upcoming season, so the staff is looking to bring on three or four more wideouts this cycle to complement five-star commit Garrett Wilson. But that said, it’s safe to assume Sheffield sits behind a number of other talented prospects like Georgia four-star Zion Puckett; Indiana four-star David Bell; Missouri four-stars Marcus Washington and Jameson Williams; Tennessee four-stars Trey Knox; and Texas four-stars Jalen “Boobie” Curry and Elijah Higgins on the Buckeyes’ list of priorities. Sheffield plans to take an official visit to Columbus and would like to make a decision before the start of his senior season.

NOT HOW I WOULD HAVE HANDLED IT Less than a week after he announced his commitment to Notre Dame over finalists Arkansas, Ohio State and Purdue, Thompson’s Station, Tennessee Independence four-star wide receiver T.J. Sheffield explained on Twitter that the Fighting Irish are not going to honor decision. Of course, there are two sides to every story. Sources close to the Notre Dame football program have told Eleven Warriors that there had been little to no communication between the two sides leading up to Sheffield’s announcement and the Fighting Irish were caught off guard by his decision. Either way, it’s a bad look for head coach Brian Kelly and wide receivers coach DelVaughn Alexander. Now, the 5-foot-10, 170-pound Sheffield must reassess his options. He visited Columbus back in early March, but wasn’t very high on the Buckeyes’ list of priorities — not with California four-star Kyle Ford, Indiana four-star David Bell; Missouri four-stars Marcus Washington and Jameson Williams; and Texas four-star Elijah Higgins all vying for the three spots remaining in the class.
Purdue had a good day today, now with two ESPN 300 commitments which ties for the most the Boilermakers have had in one class (2013) https://t.co/hvoTBMn4aM— Tom VanHaaren (@TomVH) July 31, 2018
