    ONLY A MATTER OF TIME?

Since Meyer's first recruiting class at Ohio State in 2012, we've seen a gradual decline in the number of in-state prospects signing with the Buckeyes. And even though that number dipped from 16 to seven this year, it's hard to argue with the staff's approach given the fact that the 2017 recruiting class is arguably the greatest haul of all time — that is unless you'd rather see a three-star defensive end from Toledo in the class instead of a five-star from Maryland.

The staff typically hands out offers to out-of-state prospects first for two reasons: 1. You have to get your foot in the door earlier in process because of distance and the lack of a relationship with the players and their families, and 2. A kid from any corner of Ohio is 10 times more likely to commit the moment an offer is extended.

That strategy goes out the window, though, when one of the best players in the country is in Ohio State's back yard. Such is the case with Cincinnati Anderson offensive guard Zeke Correll, whom Meyer offered over the phone on Thursday night.

“It's been an awesome experience [getting to know the staff],” Correll told Eleven Warriors. “I really like the coaches. They are very personable and are all in for the Bucks. I'm looking forward to building relationships with them.”

The 6-foot-4, 270-pound Correll is not yet ranked by any major recruiting sites, but there's no doubt in my mind that he's going to be one of the best prospects in the country for the Class of 2019 after seeing him hold his own against Cincinnati Walnut Hills four-star defensive tackle Jowon Briggs at Nike Football's The Opening Cleveland Regional last month. He also holds offers from programs such as Cincinnati, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Northwestern and Vanderbilt.

So, being an in-state kid, did Correll have any thoughts of committing on the spot?

definitely have to venture all of my options before making any decisions to go anywhere,” he said, “but I am definitely going back for a visit sometime [soon]s. Building relationships with coaches is the key to a successful recruitment and maybe even your future team.”

Correll plans to be back on campus for a one-day camp next month, which will mark his third trip to Columbus in as many months.

Zeke Correll latest 2019 Ohio prospect to earn Buckeyes offer

Ohio State isn’t wasting time offering the best players in Ohio’s 2019 recruiting class. On Thursday night, the Buckeyes offered Cincinnati Anderson’s Zeke Correll, one of the country’s premier interior offensive linemen.

Correll now holds offers from 10 schools. He had a pretty good idea the Buckeyes offer was on its way.

“I wasn’t sure if it was coming on Wednesday or Thursday,” he told Land of 10 following the offer. “But I knew it was going to happen soon.”

Ohio State has been watching the 6-foot-4, 270-pound Correll closely this spring. He was dominant at Nike’s regional camp for The Opening in Cleveland in early April and has been turning heads everywhere he’s gone. To add an offer from the Buckeyes is something he’s understandably excited about.

“It’s awesome,” Correll said of the offer. “It’s surreal. Ohio State is elite football and an awesome education.”

The Buckeyes are now regarded as the team to beat moving forward in Correll’s recruitment, though his family ties to Kentucky are going to come into play. His father and his brother both played for the Wildcats and his mother was a two-sport athlete at Kentucky. His grandparents attended the school. Two of his sisters were part of Big Blue Nation. How can he possibly decide against that kind of history? It won’t be easy, according to Correll, but there’s also no hurry to make a decision.

“I am going to try and take my time, to enjoy the process,” he added. “My family has their opinions, but everyone keeps it to themselves.”

Zeke Correll, Buckeyes continue relationship building

It’s very rare for Ohio State to offer an in-state offensive lineman as early as the Buckeyes offered Zeke Correll.

Yet, despite being offered on May 25, the Cincinnati Anderson High offensive guard was on campus Tuesday, camping with Greg Studrawa and the Buckeyes anyway.

“It went well, I did good,” Correll said of his performance. “I really like Coach Stud’s tenacity. He’s an intense guy and that fits well with my character.”

Correll’s entirely family is a Kentucky student or alum, so while there is no doubt he’s got a very serious interest in the Buckeyes, he’s also very connected to the Wildcats and their staff. Ohio State needs to continue to develop its bond with him and his big, blue family.

“I think it’s a great thing,” Correll said of being present for the camp. “We can keep building a better relationship and I can get a better sense of how they coach. I may be back for Friday Night Lights.”

Correll will visit Kentucky for a 7-on-7 team tournament soon, and the Wildcats will keep swinging away as they hope to keep this legacy away from Ohio State.

Ohio State visit less about football, more about relationships, for Cade Stover

The Buckeyes are the runaway favorites to land 4-star 2019 prospect Cade Stover, and his recent visit to Columbus for Friday Night Lights didn’t hurt their chances, as you’d expect.

“It was really cool,” Stover said of last week’s trip. “The atmosphere there was crazy.”

The country’s sixth-ranked outside linebacker — who once was a highly ranked defensive end prospect — spent most of his time with linebackers coach Bill Davis. The two began getting to know each other at a camp on Ohio State’s campus in June.

“We talk about real-life stuff more than scheme,” said Stover, who didn’t work out at Friday Night Lights. “It’s cool to just hang out and get to know the guys.”

Stover, from Mansfield, Ohio, also spent plenty of time chatting with Urban Meyer.

“We’re very close, at least in my mind,” Stover said of Meyer. “There is not any more ‘filler’ in our conversations. We talk about the future, mostly. They want to see me just lead my team this fall. To make the most of the season.”

Top in-state 2019 lineman back to see Buckeyes

Ohio State will once again welcome Cincinnati 2019 offensive lineman Zeke Correll for a visit this weekend.

It’s been a wild week for the in-state junior. Last Friday was Sept. 1, meaning that college coaches across America were able to unleash messages and mailers on all of the nation’s top 2019 prospects.

“It was a little wild,” Correll said of the onslaught. “I was getting a bunch of texts at midnight, the night before a game. I am not sure how many schools messaged. Probably more than 20.

“The craziest thing was getting the mail the next day.”

A Kentucky legacy, Correll has made repeated trips to Ohio State this year. The Buckeyes have already offered. Now they’re putting their interest on paper. A lot of paper.

“I had 17 envelopes from Ohio State,” Correll said, laughing. “Wild.”
