Really a pleasure chatting with the Baldwin family (minus Matthew) before the game. Confirmed that he passed a couple exams this week that will allow the QB to enroll early at Ohio State -- after this state title game, obviously.

WTF. Unreal. This past week has not been good for OSU football..............

On the very first play Ohio State QB commit Matthew Baldwin falls to the turf in agony. Was nursing a knee injury heading into the game. Allen recovers a fumble on the play and returns it for a TD.

Just got back from talking with @matthewb_12. He doesn't know exactly what the knee injury is, but it could be an ACL. Said he practiced fine this week and it just gave out on him on the first play of the game.

Ohio State three-star quarterback signee Matthew Baldwin suffered a knee injury in the state semifinals two weekends ago, but attempted to play through the pain as Lake Travis went for its seventh state title on Saturday. He went down on the first play of the game, and watched from the sidelines in street clothes and a brace as the Cavaliers fell to Allen and four-star quarterback target Grant Tisdale, 35-33.

Though his mother told Eleven Warriors the injury wasn't as serious as initially feared — “a sprained meniscus," team doctors told her — Baldwin still hasn't had a full evaluation of his knee. It appears that'll be done by the Buckeyes' medical staff next week when he arrives on campus.

“They said they want to take care of it,” Baldwin told Cleveland.com's Bill Landis. “If it did require surgery, they want to do the surgery.”

Baldwin is an early enrollee and will begin classes on Jan. 8. He's had a lot on his plate these last few weeks in order to make that happen, too, including practice, finals and CBEs (credit by exams).

With the desire to take at least one quarterback in the current recruiting cycle, Ohio State assistant Ryan Day set his sights on Baldwin — who was committed to Colorado State at the time — halfway throught his senior season.

With his pledge, the Buckeyes no longer had room for long-time commit Emory Jones, who flipped to Florida during the Early Signing Period.

Baldwin suffered a right knee injury in the state semifinals in December, which sidelined him for all but one play of the title game one week later. He certainly won't play as a freshman as the Buckeyes determine the best path to recovery.

Regardless, with veterans Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow and Tate Martell ahead of him on the depth chart, he won't be needed for a few years.
