Anthony Hines III to visit Penn State this weekend

In a somewhat surprising development in the recruitment of 4-star Plano (Texas) East linebacker Anthony Hines III, an official visit to Penn State has been planned for this weekend.

The visit will be the second official visit in September for Hines; he also visited Texas A&M when they took on UCLA in their season opener. Now, with only three official visits remaining, Hines will have to make a difficult decision to pare down a list of almost 10 other schools to just three.

Ohio State has had multiple unofficial visits from Hines, so he knows what the Buckeyes have to offer, though there’s a discernible difference between a game-day atmosphere and a summertime trip. As of Monday, sources close to Ohio State still expect him to make an official visit this fall but it seems that coaches at UCLA, Oklahoma, Texas, TCU and others have similar feelings.

Hines will make his college decision on Nov. 29 and remains one of just a handful of linebackers that Ohio State continues to recruit in 2017.

Anthony Hines visit comes and goes
Outside of Bolden, the big news was Hines officially visiting Ohio State as an uncommitted prospect this weekend. The visit — the fifth official visit for Hines — has had all kinds of noise around it, but to this point there’s nothing to suggest anything has changed in his recruitment. Texas A&M has been the front-runner for the country’s second-ranked inside linebacker and I don’t think that’s changing.

One Ohio State commitment, however, did suggest that things were going well with Hines.

“We are doing very well with Hines,” the commitment shared.

While I have no doubt that the Buckeyes are in the mix here, it’s unlikely Hines leaves Texas, according to another source.

“I think,” the source said late Saturday night, “if he were going to leave Texas, he’d be coming (to Ohio State), but I think he’s staying home and going to A&M.”

Hines has also visited Penn State, UCLA, Florida and Texas A&M officially.

    SO YOU'RE SAYING THERE'S A CHANCE?

Because most prognosticators believed Ohio State would get a commitment from four-star safety Bubba Bolden following his official visit for the Nov. 5 game against Nebraska, it somewhat feels as if the trip by four-star linebacker Anthony Hines III slipped under the radar.

Hines, the second-ranked inside linebacker and the No. 88 prospect overall in the Class of 2017, doesn't do many interviews despite being arguably the most coveted prospect in the country. Scout.com caught up with him following his visit, however.

“Really, the biggest selling point was that the game day environment was unreal,” Hines said. “Just being in that stadium — I took a few videos, and just looking back at those, I showed some of my classmates — it is just an unreal scene. You would think it is a national holiday. There were so many people, and while the band is playing, it is just so loud in there.”

Hines, who holds more than 90 scholarship offers, also took official visits to Florida, Penn State, Texas A&M and UCLA this fall. This marked his first trip to Columbus since a three-day camp in June.

“A cool thing about Ohio State was that was the first that I got to talk with coach Meyer. That was a really cool thing,” Hines said. “To have the whole family there and have him recruit us all, it was a different perspective. It was definitely a good experience.”

The Aggies are considered the favorite to land Hines when he announces his commitment later this month, but he's not giving anything away just yet.

“Right now, probably, it is a deadlocked race,” Hines said. “I would say that it's pretty even.”
