On Sunday, the Buckeyes' hosted 2017 Cleveland East Technical four-star Markell Johnson, a Top 100 player nationally.

Johnson, a 6-foot-1 point guard, visited Virginia Tech a week ago and is considering a possible reclassification to the 2016 class, which could put Ohio State in an interesting position numbers-wise as they still evaluate 2016 wing Andre Wesson.

OHIO HOOPS STAR MARKELL JOHNSON NARROWS HIS LIST

The Buckeyes received what could be some good news today on Cleveland East Technical point guard Markell Johnson: he will reclassify to the 2016 class.

    Or will he?

Once that, the most important question about his recruitment is answered, the next–what school he'll play at next year–is going to be a hot topic in the next few months.

The country's 65th-ranked 2017 prospect dropped a list of his final schools on Monday night.

Ohio State and Virginia Tech, according to reports, are likely the frontrunners for Johnson. He visited the Buckeyes for their final home game of the year a little over a week ago against Iowa.

The Buckeyes, with a roster vacancy thanks to the departure of Austin Grandstaff, are seeking another guard to try and fill the hole. Johnson and Westerville South's Andre Wesson look to be the final two options for 2016 at this point, though Wesson may be more of a wing/forward than the true guard that the roster needs. If Johnson does reclassify, it appears that he may be the better "fit" for 2016.

Cleveland East Tech’s Markell Johnson, the No. 2 basketball player in Ohio and the composite No. 17 point guard in the 2017 class nationally according to 247Sports, is on schedule to graduate this spring and could reclassify to the 2016 class. That could be good news for Ohio State.

OSU, which had Johnson in for a visit for its upset of Iowa two weeks ago, is among Johnson's top five. Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, Louisville and Cleveland State are the others.

Because of Austin Grandstaff’s early-season departure, OSU has a scholarship available for 2016, and adding an athletic guard to the rotation might be the best way for the Buckeyes to upgrade their roster. The timing may also give the Buckeyes the best chance to land him: Johnson has been rising as a prospect, and if he plays AAU this summer and goes to prep school, more schools might come with offers.

Johnson averaged 31.2 points during the regular season and helped the Scarabs to a 21-4 record and a third straight Senate League championship. East Tech’s season ended in an overtime loss in a Division II district semifinal. As a freshman in 2014, Johnson helped East Tech reach a Division I state semifinal for the first time since 1972.
