DE Nile Sykes high on Illini, OSU, UW - OSU Buckeyes Blog - ESPN

Oak Park and River Forest (Ill.) High School is off to a 3-1 start, and one of its best players has yet to play. It will face its toughest test yet Saturday against Glenbard West, and it looks like Nile Sykes (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) should be able to play.

“I’ve been out with my ankle,” the 2014 defensive end said. “I hurt it in a scrimmage, but I’m back to practice this coming week. I’m going to see how I feel come Saturday.”

Sykes is coming off a visit to Michigan State this past weekend, and he is one of the Chicago area’s top 2014 prospects. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Sykes has offers from Illinois, Northern Illinois, Purdue and Toledo.

It was a busy week for 2014 prospect Nile Sykes (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest), who made two visits to Midwest programs.

The more recent of the two trips came Saturday to Wisconsin, which he was seeing for a second time.

“It was good. The whole game was exciting,” Sykes said.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Sykes could play more linebacker as a senior and eventually in college, and he spoke with Badgers linebackers coach Andy Buh. Area recruiter and co-defensive coordinator Chris Ash also talked with Sykes.

“Both just asked me how I was doing and thanked me for coming,” Sykes said. “Coach Ash said that he would be down to my school soon.”

Even though the Badgers lost, Sykes saw some things he liked.

“I like that they never quit and played hard on every down,” Sykes said. “Also, their fans are some of the best I’ve seen.”

During the week, Sykes made a visit to nearby Northern Illinois.

“It was great, an awesome game,” Sykes said. “I can tell they put in a lot of work.”

His next visit will go to Ohio State for the Michigan game Nov. 24, and Sykes is impressed with the 11-0 Buckeyes.

“I think they are a really well-coached team and they have a bunch of playmakers,” he said. “It’s unfortunate that they are bowl-ineligible.”

Ohio State is looking at several prospects from the Chicago area, and 2014 defensive end/linebacker Nile Sykes (Oak Park, Ill/Oak Park-River Forest) is among them.

Sykes made it to Ohio State for a visit Saturday for the game against Michigan.

"It was awesome. Both teams played hard and Ohio State really showed their dominance throughout all the game," Sykes said.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Sykes could play either defensive end or outside linebacker in college, so he kept an eye on both positions Saturday.

"Just watched they were doing, what type of blitzes they were running, how much they blitzed," Sykes said. "I also was watching the defensive line stunts. I was impressed overall."

Before the game, Sykes talked with Chicago-area recruiter Mike Vrabel a couple of times. Sykes first talked with Vrabel in the recruiting lounge and then later again on the field.

"He thanked me for coming, said it was going to be a great game. He explained that this is one of the top rivalries in college football and it's one of the reasons I wanted to come," Sykes said. "I knew how intense it would be."

With the Buckeyes pulling off the win and completing an undefeated season, Sykes said the "crowd was amazing and just loud the whole game." He called it one of the best visits he's been on.

"It's one of the most fun times I had at a game besides Wisconsin," he said. "I just got chills walking in there, seeing all those fans."

Sykes has offers from Illinois, Northern Illinois, Purdue and Toledo.

Visit/Game: "I saw a great game, one of the best rivalries in football. Before the game I spoke to Coach Vrabel. He told me thanks for coming and to keep calling. After the game I went into the locker room and listened to Coach Meyer's speech."

Potential offer: "We didn't talk about one. They've told me I'm high on their recruiting list. I know they're interested and think I can play at a high level. I've been meaning to ask about an offer, but I don't know how to go about that. I'm just being patient.

If OSU offer's?: "It would mean a lot. They're one of the top schools I would like to go to if I got the opportunity."
