Ohio State offer big for California WR Lavon Bunkley-Shelton
Brian Hartline was in Washington on Monday and visited a handful of Ohio State targets and 2020 commitment in Gee Scott. On Tuesday, the now full-time receivers coach for the Buckeyes was back in Southern California, revisiting the shadows of the Rose Bowl that Ohio State left just two weeks earlier.

While he was in sunny SoCal, Hartline stopped into one of California’s best programs, Junipero Serra in Gardena. He offered 2020 receiver Lavon Bunkley-Shelton, a 6-foot, 180-pound 4-star prospect with offers from Oklahoma, Florida, Michigan, Oregon and Florida State among his first dozen-plus.

“It’s pretty surreal,” the country’s 32nd-ranked receiver said. “Coach Hartline was at Serra and offered after we talked. We’d been talking for about a week or two.”

The California star made a pitstop to see the Buckeyes practice while they were in Los Angeles for the Rose Bowl.

“It was cool to see how they get down,” he said. “I couldn’t talk to any of the staff, so it was kind of bittersweet.

“Tuesday was my first official meeting Hartline. But I’ve seen him before, so this is the first talking to him in person. I think the world of him he blessed the kid with the offer. He’s really cool and I would definitely love to play for him. I love the fact that he gave me positive feedback — but also some constructive criticism on some things I can do better and pointers on being a better wide receiver.”

LV Bunkley-Shelton will be at Ohio State spring game
Another Ohio State target who will make his first trip to see the Buckeyes is Junipero Serra (Gardena, Calif.) 4-star receiver LV Bunkley-Shelton.

“I will be in Columbus for the Buckeyes spring game,” the country’s 39th-ranked receiver told Lettermen Row. “I can’t wait.”

Offered by the Buckeyes in mid-January, the 6-foot, 180-pound receiver is one of just a handful of players still being recruited at the position by Ohio State. That’s why the trip to Columbus is on the docket already and why it’s currently the only visit that California’s 19th-ranked prospect has locked in.

“I have some trips in the works, but this Ohio State trip is my main focus,” he said. “My family is coming with me and it’s the only trip I have set in stone.”

L.V. Bunkley-Shelton Has Strong Relationship with Brian Hartline
California 2020 wideout L.V. Bunkley-Shelton is excited to be on Ohio State’s radar. The four-star receiver said he “can’t wait” to visit Ohio State during the Spring Game on April 13.

“I’m very interested in The Ohio State,” Bunkley-Shelton said. “Definitely one of my top schools. I love the tradition and history that goes along with the ‘O.’”

The No. 47 wideout in the class said much of his interest in Ohio State is rooted in his relationship with wide receivers coach Brian Hartline. Hartline offered Bunkley-Shelton after the Rose Bowl, and the two have developed a relationship since then.

The Under Armour All-American invitee talks with Hartline about twice per week and said his relationship with Hartline is one of his strongest among schools he’s interested in. He plans

“I trust that he wants to help me be a better person,” Bunkley-Shelton said. “Most of our talks aren’t even about football. He’s a father and a husband. I see him as being a mentor as well as a coach to me, and being away from my parents, that would be huge to have someone I can talk to about life daily.”

Bunkley-Shelton also plans to visit Arizona State, Florida State, Oklahoma, Colorado and Washington State, but he said he looks forward to his visit to Ohio State the most.

Watching former Ohio State receivers Paris Campbell, Terry McLaurin and Johnnie Dixon at the NFL Combine, Bunkley-Shelton said it proved Ohio State’s ability to prepare wideouts for the next level, and while watching practice on his last visit to Ohio State, he said he enjoyed the pace the Buckeyes worked at.

“I was really impressed with the level of competition and energy of workouts,” Bunkley-Shelton said. “They get so much done in a short amount of time and the environment was lit. Hard not wanting to be a Buckeye after seeing that with my own eyes.”

The No. 239 prospect broke his collarbone and missed six games as a freshman, but he came back in the final four. He caught just 24 passes and four touchdowns as a sophomore, but in 2018, as a junior, he brought down 81 passes for 1,012 yards.

California receiver LV Bunkley-Shelton loves Ohio State visit

Taking him at his word, California receiver Lavon Bunkley-Shelton had been waiting for the trip to Ohio State for a while.

“This Ohio State trip is my main focus,” he told Lettermen Row in February. “My family is coming with me, and it’s the only trip I have set in stone.”

That visit was last weekend for the Buckeyes spring game, and the country’s 39th-ranked receiver was blown away by his trip.

“It was better than I expected,” he said. “There were so many factors. The fans. The food. Just Columbus as a whole.

“Their awesome staff, I mean it’s already the Ohio State — and then you factor in all that. It was amazing.”

California’s 20th-ranked prospect, Bunkley-Shelton left Columbus as a player a lot of people thought could be considering a commitment to Ohio State, but that didn’t happen. Exactly how Bunkley-Shelton would fit into the Ohio State plans isn’t certain, but the program will have some time to figure that out.

This weekend the young receiver will visit Oregon, and USC remains very much in the mix as well.

LV Bunkley-Shelton Continues to be interested in Buckeyes
When asked whether he was still fairly interested in Ohio State, four-star California wideout LV Bunkley-Shelton replied, “VERY INTERESTED.”

This comes in reaction to his visit to Ohio State on April 13, when he was one of many recruits visiting to watch the Ohio State spring game.

“I’m trying to get together with some of the committed guys like Gee (Scott Jr.) and Jaxon (Smith-Njigba) and do something special in Columbus,” Bunkley-Shelton said. “I would say tOSU is definitely one of my top choices.”

Bunkley-Shelton has already expressed to Eleven Warriors what he thinks about Brian Hartline, but his visit to Ohio State opened his eyes a bit more to the Buckeyes and has made him want tot return for an official visit. He’d also head to USC and Oregon, two top schools that are pursuing him as well.

“The atmosphere and the staff,” Bunkley-Shelton said about what impressed him about Ohio State. “Seems like everything at Ohio State is earned. I’m not 6-foot-2, 220, and I’m not 10.3 (100-meter dash). But I outwork those kind of dudes all day every day because I will never allow myself to be outworked by anybody. I don’t know any other way to earn it but through hard work and perseverance.”

The four-star prospect said that he wants to be committed by the summer and that he will probably release a top list by then as well.
