Freshman @OhioStateFB DB Marcus Hooker had his preliminary arraignment on DUI and other charges this morning in Pennsylvania. The case was transferred to the Court of Common Pleas. His formal arraignment will be Sept. 5.

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said freshman safety Marcus Hooker is suspended for the Buckeyes' season opener Sept. 1 vs. Oregon State. The 5-11, 192-pound Hooker landed in legal trouble June 16 as Neshannock (Pa.) Township police charged him with driving under the influence.

Meyer said DB Marcus Hooker has been cleared to play this week. He was suspended for opener. His injury hasn't been specified, to the best of my knowledge.

2018 in review: Hooker played special teams against Minnesota and Purdue, then did not play again the rest of the season. He was suspended for the first game of the season after a DUI, then was held out four more weeks due to an undisclosed hand or wrist injury.

2019 outlook: Ohio State spent the entire first half of the 2018 season searching for a starting safety opposite Jordan Fuller. That might not be a problem next season. Brendon White had a solid season, and Josh Proctor made a second-half move up the depth chart. Hooker likely won't have a shot to work his way into the regular rotation. He'll have to make his contributions on special teams.

Long-term outlook: The Buckeyes have more than enough safeties, which could hurt Hooker's ability to get on the field any time soon. Fuller will be gone after the 2019 season, but White, Proctor, Isaiah Pryor, Jahsen Wint, Amir Riep, Ronnie Hickman and Bryson Shaw will all be back. Hooker will have his chance to move up the depth chart at some point, but it's certainly crowded right now.

Few players in Ohio State history have ever made such a dramatic leap from unknown young player to national superstar in just one year as Malik Hooker did for the Buckeyes in 2016. Four years later, his younger brother Marcus will try to make a similar breakthrough.

Despite his impressive lineage, Marcus Hooker enters the 2020 season with far less hype than fellow third-year safety Josh Proctor, who’s expected to succeed Jordan Fuller as the Buckeyes’ starting deep safety. That said, Ohio State defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs has named the younger Hooker as a defensive back who he expects to play a significant role this season; it’s unclear what exactly that role will be yet, but Hooker came on strong enough during the latter portion of the 2019 season to believe that’s not just lip service.

Second-year safeties Ronnie Hickman and Bryson Shaw could also be sleepers to emerge as role players in 2020, but at a position where the Buckeyes typically only had one player on the field in 2019, Hooker is the one to watch behind Proctor that could start to make his own name for himself this fall.
