Ohio State building relationship with Lorenzo Styles

Way back in June we mentioned the name Lorenzo Styles to you for the first time. He’s a 2021 wide receiver from Pickerington (Ohio) Central High School and the son of a former Ohio State linebacker of the same name. Ohio State has been starting, slowly, to work on their relationship with the 6-foot-1, 170-pound wideout.

“I talked to [Director of Football Relations] Tim Hinton after Week One,” Styles told Lettermen Row. “We just discussed me getting there for a game.”

Right now Styles has offers from Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and Boston College, and was in South Bend for the big Irish win over Michigan to start the season. Ohio State may be forced to play a little catch-up with Notre Dame if the relationship doesn’t begin to grow quickly.

“We’ve had two calls,” Styles said. “I have talked to Tim Hinton, but during our calls I have talked to other coaches on the staff as well. Our relationship is starting to develop. I just am hoping I can get up to a game and get a better feel now.”

Lorenzo Styles set for first Ohio State visit
After a few months of discussing it, Pickerington (Ohio) North wide receiver and Ohio State legacy Lorenzo Styles is set to make his first game-day visit to the Horseshoe. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound sophomore has an offer already from Notre Dame, Boston College and Vanderbilt. He’s taken a trip this season to Notre Dame, and now the Buckeyes get a turn to showcase their program.

“I want to see the faculties,” Styles told Lettermen Row. “As well as the atmosphere during the game.”

Though his father was a former NFL linebacker, Style sticks to the offensive side of the ball. That’s where his focus will be on Saturday. How does new Ohio State assistant Brian Hartline handle his experienced group of wideouts?

“During the game, I’m going to be watching their wide receivers and see how I could fit into their great program,” he said.

Since he’s a local, Styles believes he may have a chance to spend a bit more time with the staff on Saturday than a lot of recruits would. He’s hoping to get to Ohio State bright and early that day.

“[Ohio State] will be sending my itinerary,” he said. “Hopefully I can get up there early.”

It’d be in the Buckeyes best interest to offer Styles early, too.

    VISITING IN STYLES
Not so long ago, Lorenzo Styles was setting the world on fire in the Shoe. Before becoming an NFL linebacker, Styles played for three seasons at Ohio State under John Cooper in the mid-1990s. He was drafted in the third round of the 1995 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.

Styles' NFL career ended in 2000 but not before he helped the St. Louis Rams win Super Bowl XXXIV. While his playing days are over, Styles' legacy still lives on through his son Lorenzo Styles Jr., who's currently a sophomore wide receiver at Pickerington Central.

Styles Jr. will be in attendance this Saturday as the Buckeyes host Indiana. He'll have his first up close and personal look at the program his father excelled in.

"It’s right around the corner [from Pickerington Central] so I have seen the university, but I’m really excited to get an up close view of the football program," Styles Jr. told Eleven Warriors. "Right now, it’s still early on in the recruiting process so I want to get a feel for a lot of schools and find my best fit."

Styles Jr. is certainly becoming one of the most coveted prospects in the 2021 recruiting class. He currently has offers from Notre Dame, Boston College and Vanderbilt but make no mistake about it, many more will be coming his way.

While the Buckeyes haven't offered yet, Styles Jr. says he's been in frequent contact with coaches Tim Hinton, Brian Hartline, Alex Grinch and Urban Meyer. They probably see what everybody else sees in Styles Jr. – an uber-talented young prospect with an incredibly bright future.

Pickerington Central is currently 6-0 for the first time since 2014 and Styles Jr. is a main factor as to why. Just last week, in the Tigers' 27-14 win over Gahanna Lincoln, the speedy 6-foot-1, 170-pound sophomore scored on a 10-yard touchdown reception and set up the team's third touchdown with a 55-yard punt return.

Notre Dame is currently believed to have an early lead in Styles Jr.'s recruitment. But as he said himself, it's still very early, meaning two things: his eventual destination is far from certain and he'll continue to get even better than he already is as times goes on.

"As an athlete, I feel like it’s an ongoing process to develop on the field and off the field," he said. "Whether I’m working on speed, running better routes, in the weight room, increasing my football IQ or watching film to prepare for games ... I’ll never know too much and will always look for opportunities to get better."

Last season, Pickerington Central won the Ohio Division I State Championship. Styles Jr. sees no reason why a repeat isn't possible ... and he'll do anything to help his team do so.

"Whatever coach needs me to do, I will do. I feel I can run and catch the ball well, as well as be a good defender," Styles Jr. said. ""If we keep executing the game plan coach has given, I feel a repeat is definitely possible."

Lorenzo Styles loves first visit at Ohio State
Ohio State legacy Lorenzo Styles made his first visit as a recruit to the school his father once starred for on Saturday. Though the elder Styles, a linebacker under John Cooper, has been back to campus a few times, the young wide receiver went into this trip eager to see what the Buckeyes had to offer.

“Ohio State is a great and well-known program,” the 2021 Pickerington North star told Lettermen Row. “So. I really expected a lot, and it definitely met that expectation. To me, being from Ohio, I just felt really comfortable. I knew some of the coaches, staff members and players.

“The visit, in general, was great.”

Notre Dame, Boston College and Vanderbilt have offered the 6-foot-1, 170-pound Styles, while Ohio State has not yet. But this visit was just to start really building relationships with the coaching staff, and it did just that. It also afforded Ohio State a chance to show off the facilities that have taken shape since his father’s years.

“Walking through the Woody Hayes facility,” Styles said. “I saw so many things my dad has been a part of, things he has talked to me about over the years. That was very cool. The atmosphere was amazing.”

Lorenzo Styles adds Michigan offer, talks Ohio State trip
Lorenzo Styles, a budding star at Pickerington Central High School, was also at Ohio State this past weekend. His father Lorenzo played at Ohio State, so the 6-foot-1, 190-pound sophomore is no stranger to the lore around The Game. Still, being there in person for it was a wholly different experience.

“The atmosphere was so amazing,” Styles told Lettermen Row. “Being from Ohio, The Game definitely lived up to the hype. The visit was great.”

Styles was offered by Michigan on Tuesday, another big-time offer for a player who has started to turn into a national prospect. Notre Dame was his first offer, but the Buckeyes are still in evaluation mode. That’s kind of the norm when it comes to Ohio State and in-state players. Last weekend was just one more building block in the developing relationship between Styles and a handful of coaches.

“I talked to [receivers] Coach [Brian] Hartline, [safeties] Coach [Alex] Grinch, and [Ohio State staff member] Coach [Tim] Hinton for a little bit pre-and-postgame,” Styles said. “The first visit I had [Oct. 6 for the Indiana game] was more in-depth conversations with those coaches and others, but I understand that Saturday was a huge game.

“After such a big win it was exciting. The whole program, as well as most of the state, was excited about this win. That feeling of being apart of something so big … man.”

Where most kids visiting for that game are getting their first taste of what it means to be a Buckeye, Styles is obviously familiar. The recent offer from Michigan is also important for a player set on exploring his options for college. He’s hoping that Ohio State offers and knows it is interested.

“I’ve always known what Ohio State is because my dad played there and shared stories with me about Ohio State,” Styles said. “It’s a program that will always be able to compete. For every good athlete they have on the field, they have another one waiting to get on the field. It’s what makes them successful.

“The Michigan offer really means a lot to me. It’s a Big Ten school and it has a lot to offer in the classroom as well as on the field. The coaching staff from Ohio State and myself always have conversations consisting of how I am and how the season is, so it appears they have a great interest in me as well. Only time will tell though. I’m blessed to have the offers I have as a sophomore. I’m going to continue to work hard on improving myself as a player and get familiar with programs so I can make a decision when the time is right.”

Michigan has made a concerted effort to have a bigger impact in Ohio in recent months, and early offers to players like Styles are a good way to keep up that momentum.
