I saw Day's name come up talking about the Colorado job. That would be a terrible idea. If that's only job calling right now, take your Millions to be an assistant
I'll try to trust Gene Smith and the Trustees on this one. Good luck coach. I have a lot of reservations, though
I'm disappointed the administration didn't open up the search, even if that meant losing some recruits. On its face, Day's resume is not Ohio State caliber. He's a young elite coordinator with no HC experience or connections to Ohio or the Midwest in general. This move from Meyer to Day seems so disparate than the move from Tressel to Meyer. In 2011 we basically decided to punt. We ate an entire season to be sure we got the best guy for the job. In 2019, we're taking the Stoops/Riley approach. Obviously the goal is to maintain continuity, but Day isn't Meyer. This staff has a lot of coaches ending their contracts or only signed through '19. I'm sure Gene Smith got a feel from them about the situation, but it's hard for me to think Kevin Wilson, Johnson and Schiano are stoked to work under a 39-year-old with no HC experience. It appears to have worked out for Oklahoma. I just wonder what opportunities we're leaving out there. As long as I've been watching football, there has never been a better coaching job opening than this one. Guys would leave big-time schools in a heartbeat to take over this team with the talent that's currently assembled. It sucks to lose a coach to retirement while he's still dominant, but it presents an amazing opportunity for the next guy. Day will inherit an elite program, whereas every other coach that we've hired has inherited a program with issues and subpar roster. The old cliche "wait until he gets his guys" can cut both ways. We're in a situation where whoever we hire is likely going to get an artificial boost for the first couple years. That can catapult a young guy like Day to a hall-of-fame career, or it can hide real issues that won't surface until it's too late and we've lost our place and are in need of a rebuild. At Ohio State, there's no need to take that risk, IMO.
I think this hire has everything to do with Urban nudging Gene. Meyer obviously thinks a lot of Day. I'll trust them, hesitantly...
I'm so nervous about this... If we handle this badly we could be looking at a slump the kind TTUN and USC have experienced. I've known that day could come, but I hope it's not the next 5 years.
Who TF scheduled that? Actually next season's schedule sucks in general. We won't get any credit for our non-conference but Cincinnati could give us a game, October sucks with MSU, @NWestern and Wisconsin, then Penn State and @Michigan back-to-back. That's a tough-ish schedule that doesn't look tough to outsiders.
Day needs to surround himself with a lot of Ohio guys to keep him reminded of the importance of the THE Game. Marcus Freeman would be a good start.
I hate this move. Day is not a head coach or close to it. Maybe it's fitting that Urban's final act is one of nepotism. I guess he and Gene haven't learned anything after all.
Ill give this a shot but this feels like it could be charlie strong at Texas tenure...i hope im wrong.
"Our program does not need disruption," Smith says on why he didn't conduct a national search.— Stephen Means (@Stephen_Means) December 4, 2018 I understand, to a degree. But you can't just remove Urban Meyer and expect to be the same program long term. Urban leaving is the disruption.
Ryan Day’s contract is for five years, will pay him $4.5 million per year— Bill Landis (@BillLandis25) December 4, 2018 Those numbers say "we're committed to you long term, but we can afford to fire you tomorrow"
I think Day will do just fine. It seems this is what the college game is going to. Three of the coaches in the top five went straight from coordinator to HC at their current schools. Dabo, Riley, and Kirby. We will be fine
I'm guessing Wilson goes to OC Im hoping Schiano and Bill Davis take new jobs and Marcus Freeman comes on board
Day has been an assistant for 17 years...……… Mark my words. Ryan Day will be great at Ohio State. I think we got lucky he was still here this year and not being a head coach before does not concern me at all...….. We are going to lose some recruits regardless of who is named...…….. This is all about Ryan Day's reputation, development of players and his performance as the interim head coach during a difficult period in the program and most of all his ability to RECRUIT.
